LET’S TALK ABOUT HEARTWORMS 📣
(CLICK ON EACH INDIVIDUAL PICTURE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THESE INCREDIBLE DOGS).
Bastrop County Animal Shelter has a handful of INCREDIBLE dogs that are constantly overlooked due to the fact that they tested positive for heartworms. To help offset the cost of treatment, these dogs below have a $0 adoption fee. The sad reality is dogs with heartworms are passed up so often that it puts them at a higher risk of being euthanized. They deserve a chance..
So here are the facts..
FACTS:
🐾 Heartworms are parasitic worms that live in a dog’s heart, lungs, and blood vessels.
🐾 Heartworms are only spread through mosquito bites
🐾 Heartworms can be deadly in dogs if it goes undetected/untreated. BUT good news.. it is treatable. (treatment varies on severity)
Q&A
🐾 How much is heartworm treatment? Heartworm treatment varies by size and severity. However; there are many low cost vet clinics, like save an angel and emancipet, who offer treatment at a lower cost.
🐾 If my dog has heartworms, how long will they live? If treated, most dogs live a long normal life.
🐾 What does treatment usually entail? Depending on the method chosen by your veterinarian, treatment can either consist of antibiotics and/or series of injections.
These dogs didn’t choose the heartworm life, but they are ready to choose a long life with you. To inquire about one of these pups, or if you have more questions, please give us a call at the shelter. We would be happy to share more information with you.
If you’re interested in giving one of these sweet dogs a chance at a home, we are open for visits/adoptions Tuesday - Saturday 10:30-4:30 (ALSO OPEN THIS SUNDAY 5/31). No appointment necessary to meet any dogs at the shelter.
Dogs in foster may have even already started treatment. If the dog is in foster and not at the physical shelter, you will find that noted on their picture in the post and an application can be submitted through our site for review by the foster. 😊
