It’s National Immunization Awareness Month, and Keeping your dog up to date on vaccines is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect them from serious—and sometimes life-threatening—diseases. Some vaccines are recommended for every dog, while others are based on your dog’s lifestyle, age, travel, and risk of exposure. We can help create the vaccine plan that’s right for your best friend.

Distemper, Parvovirus, Adenovirus, and Parainfluenza vaccines are typically given together as one combination vaccine. We update them annually. Rabies is given separately and is required by Oklahoma law for all dogs. This is given every one to three years depending on their last dose. Your dog’s lifestyle will determine if other vaccines, such as Bordetella (kennel cough) and Leptospirosis, are recommended.

🩺 August is National Immunization Awareness Month 🐾

We’re kicking off National Immunization Awareness Month by talking about one of the most important vaccines your pet can receive: rabies.

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the brain and nervous system of mammals, which includes our pets, and people. Once symptoms appear, it is almost always fatal, which is why prevention through vaccination is so important.

Getting your pet vaccinated isn’t just about protecting your own pet. It helps protect your family, your neighbors, local wildlife, and our entire community. Even indoor pets can have unexpected encounters with bats or other wildlife, so staying current on vaccinations is still important.

Did you know that Oklahoma state law requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies? Keeping your pet’s rabies vaccine up to date is the law, and also one of the simplest ways to keep them safe. ❤️🐾

I think we can all agree that our summers can get craaazy hot, right?!! 🥵

Let’s talk about what we need to remember in order to keep our pets safe. Dogs and cats that spend time outdoors need constant access to fresh water, and a shaded place to get out of the sun. Bringing your pet indoors, during periods of extreme heat, could save your furry family member’s life.

☀️ If you’re taking your dog for a walk, remember that sidewalks and asphalt heat up much faster than the air. A simple way to check the temperature is to place the back of your hand on the pavement for about 7 seconds ✋. If it’s uncomfortable for you, it’s too hot for your dog’s paw pads.

A few simple precautions can help prevent painful burns, overheating, and heatstroke:

- Always provide cool, fresh water. 💧
- Make sure outdoor pets have plenty of shade. 🌳
- Walk them early in the morning or later in the evening. 🦮
- Avoid hot pavement whenever possible. 🔥
- Watch for signs of overheating such as excessive panting, weakness, drooling, vomiting, or collapse. 🤒

If you think your pet may be suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area immediately and contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.

🐾 Is Your Pet Trying to Tell You Something? 👂

Ear infections are one of the most common reasons dogs and cats visit the vet. While some pets are more prone to them than others, any pet can develop an ear problem.

Keep an eye out for signs like:
- Frequent head shaking
- Scratching at the ears
- Redness or swelling
- A bad odor from the ears
- Dark discharge or debris
- Sensitivity when the ears are touched

Ear infections, if left untreated, can become painful or even lead to more serious problems.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, give us a call. We’re happy to examine your pet’s ears and recommend the right treatment to get them feeling better.❤️🐾❤️

With the Fourth of July right around the corner, there are several things we can do as pet owners to make the holiday less traumatic for our furry family members. Fireworks can be fun for us, but they can, and do, cause many issues for pets. 🎆

Here are a few ways you can help your pet feel safer:

~ Keep pets indoors before fireworks begin.
~ Create a quiet, comfortable “safe space” with their favorite bed or blanket. Some dogs feel safer in something called a “thunder shirt” which can give them a little extra “squeeze” of comfort.
~ Turn on a TV, fan, or calming music to help mask loud noises.
~ Offer a favorite toy, puzzle, or treat to provide a positive distraction.
~ Make sure collars fit properly and ID tags and microchip information are up to date in case a frightened pet escapes.
~ If your pet has severe anxiety, contact your veterinarian before the holiday to discuss safe options.

Oklahoma summers can be brutal, and our pets feel the heat just like we do. 🥵☀️

One of the simplest ways to help keep your pet safe during hot weather is making sure they always have access to fresh, clean water. Whether your pet is relaxing in the backyard, joining you on a walk, or traveling with you, staying hydrated is essential.

Remember to:
🐾 Provide fresh water throughout the day
🐾 Bring water along on walks and outings
🐾 Make sure outdoor pets have access to shade
🐾 Limit activity during the hottest parts of the day
🐾 Walk dogs in the early morning or evening whenever possible

Watch for signs of overheating, including excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, or bright red or pale gums. If you notice these symptoms, move your pet to a cool area and contact your veterinarian immediately.

A little extra attention to hydration can go a long way toward keeping your pet happy, healthy, and safe this summer. ☀️💧🐾

🐾 Sometimes the best medicine is a wagging tail, a happy purr, and a little extra time together. 💚

Life gets busy, but our pets don’t ask for much. A walk around the neighborhood, a favorite toy, a good belly rub, or a few quiet minutes together can mean the world to them.
