Humane Society of Barron County The Humane Society of Barron County is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) animal shelter serving Barron County and surrounding areas since 1978.

An Appointment is required for adoptions, meet & greets, and animal surrenders. Our open hours are for our Pet Pantry and Donation drop off. We also have a donation bin located outside our door for after hours drop offs. The Humane Society of Barron County is a non-profit 501(c)3 animal shelter serving Barron County and surrounding areas. We are dedicated and diligent in finding permanent, loving homes for all companion animals that have found their way to us. We are operated by a small staff and rely heavily on volunteers, as well as funds from donations, memberships, and fundraisers to keep our doors open.

For Poppy & Spud — Two Very Special Friends

Hi, everybody!

It's me, The Medicare Mutt with Charlie Waffles

My mom and dad tell me that sometimes the very best things in life just need a little extra love, a little patience, and someone willing to believe in them.
That's why I'm so excited to sponsor two very special friends — Spud and Poppy!

🐾 Spud has already been through a little more than his fair share. He had orthopedic surgery in the past, but he's doing well and doesn't require ongoing care for it. He's just waiting for someone to look past his medical history and see the wonderful companion he can be.

🐾 Poppy is a sweet senior kitty whose eyes don't work quite as well as they used to. She's finding shelter life a little overwhelming, and what she really needs is a peaceful, loving home where she can feel safe, comfortable, and cherished.
Now, I may be a dog, but I know a thing or two about unconditional love. And I happen to believe that every animal deserves a family, no matter their age, their history, or the challenges they've faced.

So, with a little help from my mom and dad, we're sponsoring their adoption fees to help these two sweet souls find the homes they deserve.

To Poppy and Spud: I'm rooting for you both! Somewhere out there are people whose lives will be so much better because you're in them.

🎤🐾 SPUD UPDATE: REPORTING LIVE FROM FOSTER CARE!

GUYS. GUYS! I have some VERY exciting news to report.

I AM DOING GREAT! 🎉

First of all, I am housetrained. 👏 And when my foster parents leave for work? I do just fine hanging out at home. Turns out, I can be a pretty responsible roommate when given the chance!

I've been going on walks, exploring new places, and learning about all sorts of new things. The world is a pretty big place, guys, and I'm taking it all in one sniff at a time.

Now, in the interest of honest journalism, I do occasionally get a LITTLE excited when I meet new people. I'm still learning, and foster care has been giving me the chance to practice, build confidence, and work on being the best version of myself. I'm trying hard, and I'm making progress!

Also, breaking news: NAPS IN A REAL HOME ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST. 💤 Getting comfortable, settling in, and just being a dog in a home? 10/10. Highly recommend.

BUT GUYS, HERE'S THE BIG UPDATE! 📢

My foster family is heading out of town, so I'll be returning to the shelter TODAY. Which means if you've been thinking about meeting me, THIS IS YOUR MOMENT! Now's your chance to come say hello, get to know me, and see if we might be a good fit.

Foster care has been great, but I'm ready for a home of my very own. Someone to keep exploring with, keep learning with, and come home to after a long day of being a very good boy.

✂️📄 HELP US CUT TO THE CHASE! We want to help you clean out your closets! 📄✂️

We know. We KNOW. We've been asking for a lot lately. And we appreciate every single person who has helped us keep the shelter stocked and our animals cared for. ❤️

But this time, we're hoping you might have something tucked away in a closet, sitting on a shelf, or collecting dust in a corner that could find a second life at HSBC!

✂️ First up: A HEAVY-DUTY PAPER CUTTER!

You know the kind. The big, sturdy, arm-with-a-blade paper cutter that used to sit in the corner of your school classroom. The one that could slice through a stack of worksheets like nobody's business.

Okay, it doesn't actually have to be from 1987 or smell faintly of chalk dust. 😂 But we do need a workhorse! Something capable of cutting through several sheets of paper at once, including heavier paper and cardstock.

📄 Next up: A PAPER SHREDDER!

Our current shredder is doing its best, bless its little mechanical heart. But it's slow, frequently overworked, and turning paper shredding into a much bigger chore than it needs to be.

If you have a shredder that's no longer earning its keep at home or in your office, we'd love to give it a new job!

So before you donate, toss, or store away that office equipment you're no longer using, would you consider giving it a second life at the Humane Society of Barron County?

Sometimes the most helpful donations aren't for the animals directly. They're the everyday tools that help the humans behind the scenes get things done, so they have more time to spend with the animals!

💧🐾 OUR COMMUNITY IS BRINGING THE HEAT! (Well, technically, the hot water!)

Remember our We-Didn’t-Wish-for-This Wishlist and our unexpected water heater expense? We have some wonderful news to share!

Thanks to our AMAZING community, we've raised $890 toward our $2,600 goal! 🎉💙

That's $890 closer to putting this unexpected expense behind us, and we are so grateful to everyone who has already chipped in to help.

In case you missed the original story, last week we arrived at the shelter to discover we had no hot water. Thankfully, we got everything fixed within a day, but the bill for the replacement water heater was an expense we hadn't planned for.

Hot water might not be the most exciting thing on a shelter's wishlist, but it's essential for proper sanitation, cleaning, laundry, dishes, and even those occasional warm baths our furry residents need. 🛁

We're making progress, but we still have $1,710 to go!

🐾 Can you help us get the rest of the way there?

Whether it's $5, $25, or whatever you can comfortably give, every donation brings us closer to our goal and helps us keep our resources available for the animals who need us.

Truffle here, and I have a very important question.

WHY am I named after a dessert if nobody is offering me dessert?!

I feel this is a branding opportunity that has been tragically overlooked. I have the name. I have the looks. I have the personality of a five-star dining experience. All I need is a human who appreciates the finer things in life, like me. 💅

Now, I’m not saying you should adopt me because of my name. I’m saying you should adopt me because I’m a whole treat all by myself. And unlike an actual truffle, I’m available for cuddles, companionship, and making your life significantly more entertaining.

So go ahead and enjoy your cake, cookies, or chocolate today. (Please keep the chocolate away from me, thank you very much. I have standards AND safety concerns.)

😻 Gina here, reporting from the scene of the purr-fect makeover!

Yesterday, the wonderful volunteers from WESTconsin Credit Union spent HOURS assembling and fixing up cat towers here at the shelter. And let me tell you, their hard work has not gone unnoticed. Well, at least not by me. 😉

I wasted absolutely NO time putting these upgrades to the test. New towers? Check. Cozy spots? Check. Excellent places to lounge around and supervise the humans? DOUBLE CHECK. 🐾

I believe the appropriate response is to get comfy, look adorable, and enjoy the fruits of their labor. And I am EXCELLING at all three.

A big THANK YOU to the WestConsin volunteers for making our shelter a better place for us kitties! ❤️

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some very important napping to do. 😴

LOST: ONE OUNCE. REWARD OFFERED.

My food lady said I “lost an ounce" this week.

I don't know what an ounce is. I don't know where it went. I don't know how you lose something that was apparently attached to you.

But I heard the words lost and mine (well, technically, they said I lost it, which means it must have been mine), and I have decided that I WANT IT BACK.

My humans have been spectacularly unhelpful in this investigation. Have they tried looking in the treat jar? Checking their pockets? Retracing their steps? Back to the food bowls?

So, if anyone has seen an ounce, please contact my humans immediately. Tell them Maggie sent you. I don't know what it looks like, but I will know when it's mine.

I want my ounce back.

💙 A HUGE THANK YOU to WESTconsin Credit Union! 💙

Today, 18 WestConsin Credit Union team members joined us at the Humane Society of Barron County for Community Care Day, and WOW, did they make things happen! 🐾

From building dog kennels and painting inside the shelter to assembling what felt like an endless number of cat towers, cleaning out our shed, and taking down sunsails to prepare for winter, this crew tackled project after project and checked off some long-overdue tasks on our to-do list.

It was a whirlwind of a day, and we were so busy putting everyone to work that we didn't get nearly as many pictures as we wish we had! But trust us, the impact was BIG. 💪

We are incredibly grateful for the time, energy, teamwork, and willingness to jump in wherever help was needed. Days like today make such a difference for our shelter, our staff, and most importantly, the animals who depend on us.

Thank you, WestConsin Credit Union, for spending your Community Care Day with us and helping make HSBC a better place for the animals in our care. We couldn't be more thankful! 💙🐶🐱

💧🐾 A LITTLE HOT WATER, A LOT OF HELP!

Our We-Didn’t-Wish-for-This Wishlist is still going, and we're hoping you can help us cross one very important item off the list!

Last week's water heater emergency was thankfully resolved within a day, but the bill for our new unit came with a not-so-fun surprise: $2,600 we hadn't planned to spend.

We know a water heater isn't the most exciting thing to fund, and we're pretty sure none of our animals have ever dreamed of receiving one as a gift. 😂

But hot water is essential to shelter life. From proper sanitation and cleaning to endless loads of laundry and the occasional much-needed warm bath, it's one of those behind-the-scenes necessities that helps us care for the animals safely every day.

We'd much rather put unexpected dollars toward veterinary care, food, and enrichment, so we're asking our wonderful community to help us cover this expense.

🎁🐾 OUR “WE DIDN’T WISH FOR THIS” WISHLIST

You know those things you never put on your wishlist, but suddenly find yourself needing anyway? Yeah... we have one of those. 😅

Last week, we came into the shelter to discover we had NO HOT WATER. After some troubleshooting, we learned our aging water heater had officially called it quits, and replacement parts were no longer available.

Thankfully, we were able to get everything fixed within a day, and the hot water is flowing again! 🙌

But now the bill has arrived, and we'd really appreciate some help covering this unexpected expense.

Our We-Didn't-Wish-for-This Wishlist includes:

💧 One new water heater
💧 $2,600 to cover the cost
💧 A little help from our amazing community

Hot water is essential for proper sanitation, cleaning, laundry, dishes, and keeping the shelter safe and healthy for the animals in our care. It also comes in handy for the occasional warm bath when a pup needs a little freshening up. 🛁

We'd much rather spend our fundraising dollars on things like veterinary care, enrichment, and helping animals find loving homes. But sometimes, the less exciting necessities need attention, too!
