I can’t count how many times I’ve heard someone say “I’ll shoot that dog if it comes on my property again.” It hurts my heart. But I do understand that stray dogs can be a nuisance. But that doesn’t justify k1lling them to get rid of them. Please just call and have patience. A lot of times stray dogs have been dumped by the owner (also extremely illegal!). Don’t trap them and take them somewhere else and dump them (it’s illegal to abandon an animal even if it’s not yours!!!). They are just lost and confused and just want someone to love them. 😥💔🐾
Public Education Notice – Legal Responsibilities Regarding Dogs & Animal Welfare
Lamar County Animal Services responded today to a call involving a dog that had been intentionally trapped by a property owner. During the incident, threats were made to shoot the dog while it was confined. This situation provides an important opportunity to educate the public on Georgia law and the proper, legal way to handle animal-related concerns.
Under Georgia law (O.C.G.A. §§ 4-8-5 and 16-12-4), it is illegal to harm or kill a dog except in very limited circumstances. A person may use force only when a dog is actively posing an immediate threat to people, livestock, poultry, or other animals. Shooting or harming a dog simply because it is on private property, unwanted, or confined in a trap is not legally justified.
Additionally:
• It is unlawful to cause unjustifiable pain, suffering, or death to an animal.
• Threats of violence toward an animal, including verbal threats, are taken seriously and may result in enforcement action.
• Any response to an animal situation must be necessary, reasonable, and humane under the circumstances.
Lamar County Animal Services takes all reports of animal cruelty, threats, and unlawful conduct seriously and will pursue appropriate action when violations occur. Violence or threats are not acceptable methods for resolving animal-related issues.
Lamar County Animal Services is currently operating with one field enforcement officer responding to calls for service. Calls are handled in the order received and prioritized based on urgency and public safety. Our team is working tirelessly to address every situation as quickly, safely, and responsibly as possible.
We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we continue to serve the community while upholding our commitment to lawful and humane animal care.
