Before training a dog, you must have a relationship based on compassion, empathy, and respect. To achieve that, you must be able to understand your dog's needs, emotions, and how they communicate. PLEASE SHARE – Dog training has changed dramatically in the past 30 years. While the use of aversive techniques such as choke and prong collar corrections, shock collars, alpha wolf rollovers, dominance downs, and other methods based on positive punishment and negative reinforcement were the predominant form of dog training many years ago, these methods are now considered to be both unnecessary but also counter-productive and detrimental. Many consider them to be inhumane. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB), and the Pet Professional Guild (PPG) recommend that aversives NEVER be used. PLEASE SHARE – When a dog kills a person or another dog, it makes the news. In the Spring of 2017 a dog in Maine killed a dog, was put into a shelter, and amidst much controversy was then put up for adoption. In Virginia, a rescue dog killed a 91-year-old woman the first day in its new home. That dog had a known bite history but was still put up for adoption by a rescue organization. These are tragic events for all, and they did not need to happen.
This blog post is a combination of two columns I wrote for Downeast Dogs News on the topic of dangerous dogs. I discuss how Maine law defines a dangerous dog and how those with expertise and training in canine behavior would determine if a dog is dangerous. In the second article, I discuss what I believe to be the responsibilities of those placing dangerous dogs into the community or those considering adopting such a dog. Lastly, I have updated the articles as they appeared in Downeast Dog News to include information on the dog attack in Virginia.

PLEASE SHARE – Some people believe a dog training class is only for competition or working dogs and is not necessary for a pet, or companion dog. Others see training as nothing more than teaching a dog to sit and walk nicely on a leash. In my mind, dog training entails everything we need to do to ensure that our dogs can be included in our lives as much as possible and that they can have a long, enjoyable life free of fear, force, and pain. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD-In his latest ForceFreePets.com blog post, Don Hanson, PCBC-A, begins the first in a series of articles in which he reflects on how the pet care industry has changed for the better over the past 30 years. He discusses how canine behavior experts have universally condemned the use of dominance and aversive methods, such as shock, prong, and choke collars. At the same time, he warns people with pets that some unfortunately use these methods and tools with their dogs, despite them being considered inhumane and abusive.
