Effective immediately, Maine Working Dogs will no longer place dogs in sport only homes.

To clarify, sport-only homes are not the same as homes that participate in dog sports while providing their dogs with fulfilling lives outside of competition. We have no issue with dog sports; we simply will not place dogs in homes where training, titles, and competition are their entire existence.

We breed for ourselves first and for legitimate operational work, including law enforcement, detection, search and rescue, and personal protection. Our dogs are not produced for competition, titles, or sporting recognition.

We would far rather place a suitable dog in a responsible family protection home, where the owners are committed to investing the time, training, structure, and continued development that the dog requires, than place it in a competitive environment that does not align with our program. A working dog deserves more than simply being worked. It deserves capable ownership, appropriate care, and a meaningful life outside of training.

Our responsibility to these dogs does not end when ownership changes hands. We brought them into this world, we decide where they go, and we have to live with those decisions.

We are frequently asked when our next litter is planned or whether we have puppies available. While we appreciate the interest in our dogs, we think it’s important to explain why our puppies are so rarely available.

Maine Working Dogs is a program built around our own needs, not public demand.

When we plan a litter, it is because we are looking for something specific for the future of our program. We evaluate what each dog has to offer, what we hope a particular pairing will produce, and whether that breeding will genuinely contribute to the direction we are working toward.

We are breeding dogs we want to keep, not producing puppies we hope someone else will buy.

Any puppies we make available to qualified homes are simply those we have chosen not to retain. Their availability is a result of our breeding program, not its purpose.

We also believe there is an important distinction between being able to breed a dog and having a legitimate reason to do so.

Not every good working dog needs to reproduce. Not every female needs to have a litter. And not every pairing that could produce beautiful, marketable puppies is a pairing worth making.

There are already more than enough dogs being produced without a clear purpose. Responsible breeding requires restraint, honest evaluation, and the willingness to leave perfectly capable dogs out of a breeding program.

We believe the decision NOT to breed is just as important as the decision to breed.

That is why our litters are limited, our puppies are rarely available, and our breeding schedule will never revolve around how many inquiries we receive.

Our goal is not to make puppies available. Our goal is to make every breeding meaningful.
