‼️ We’re taking a pause ‼️

All clients with active support periods will still receive formulations, support, etc., I just will not be taking new clients at this time. I will be reaching out to anyone impacted individually over the next few days.

Milo has cancer. This is something I hoped I would never have to write but here we are. 6 weeks ago he had a toe amputated to remove a growth. The biopsy came back as a low- grade myxosarcoma and clear margins were not met. Unfortunately, his recovery has been complication after complication and today we discovered that the mass has already started growing back. Next week we have an oncology consult to get a bigger picture and discuss next steps.

For now, I need to focus on my boy. If you are in need of a formulation ASAP, please reach out for a list of referrals.

Thank you!

When you're feeding a homemade diet, small differences in ingredient amounts can add up which is why I always recommend weighing ingredients rather than relying on cups, pieces, or “one of this” and “two of that.”

Here's why:

🥩 The way you cut an ingredient changes its volume.
A cup of finely chopped pork can weigh differently than a cup of larger chunks.

🍗 The way you prepare chicken changes how much fits into a cup.
Shredded chicken and cubed chicken can have very different weights even when you're using the same measuring cup.

🍗 Individual ingredients aren't identical in size.
Take seven chicken thighs all from one package. They're all “one chicken thigh,” but they can vary considerably in weight.

𝐀 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭.

When you're trying to formulate a homemade diet with specific nutrient requirements, precision matters. Which is why my formulations use weights rather than vague measurements like cups, pieces, handfuls, or “one chicken thigh.”

When it comes to your dog's nutrition, close enough isn't the goal. The goal is a diet that's actually tailored to your dog. 🎯

Milo's meals this week are... well... very white. And if I'm being completely transparent, they're missing most of the nutrients I would normally insist on. So let's talk about why.

As some of you know, Milo had surgery last week to remove a mass from his foot, which unfortunately resulted in a toe amputation. Healing hasn't gone as we'd hoped, and this morning we found ourselves in the ER.

He's now on several medications to keep him comfortable and pain-free, but those same medications can also make him uninterested in food. Right now, it's incredibly important that he eats with every dose to help protect his stomach, even if his meals aren't perfectly balanced.

One thing I know he'll never turn down is chicken and rice. Am I trying to sneak supplements into it? Not this time. At this moment, getting calories into him is far more important than making every meal nutritionally complete.

I always advocate for feeding a balanced diet, but recovery is a great reminder that nutrition isn't about perfection, it's about meeting the needs of the individual in front of you. Sometimes that means adjusting the plan, even if it's only for a little while.

Once Milo is feeling better and his appetite returns, we'll get right back to his normal balanced meals. For now, we're celebrating every bite he eats. ❤️

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is seeing the incredible transformation that can happen when a dog is fed a homemade diet that's carefully formulated for 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 individual needs.

Gigi is a perfect example. She found the most amazing forever foster home, and her mom (a longtime client) reached out to me to build her her own diet.

When Gigi entered rescue, she was diagnosed with kidney disease and was started on several prescription renal diets, including canned, kibble, and cooked options. Unfortunately, she consistently refused to eat them.

Together, we created a balanced homemade diet using ingredients she genuinely enjoys while still supporting her unique nutritional needs. Five months later, she's still excited for every meal, and seeing her thrive has been incredibly rewarding.

"𝐺𝑖𝑔𝑖 𝑖𝑠 𝑑𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐹𝐴𝑁𝑇𝐴𝑆𝑇𝐼𝐶! 𝑆ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑠 ℎ𝑎𝑑 𝑧𝑒𝑟𝑜 𝑟𝑒𝑓𝑢𝑠𝑎𝑙 𝑡𝑜 𝑒𝑎𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑧𝑒𝑟𝑜 𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 𝑣𝑒𝑡 𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑠 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑔 ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑡! (𝐵𝑜𝑡ℎ 𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑎 𝑟𝑒𝑔𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑟 𝑜𝑐𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑜𝑢𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑟) 𝑆ℎ𝑒'𝑠 𝑑𝑢𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑛𝑒𝑤 𝑏𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑑𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘 𝑛𝑒𝑥𝑡 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑡ℎ. 𝑆𝑜, ℎ𝑜𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑖𝑠 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒!"

Every dog deserves a nutrition plan that supports both their health and their quality of life. If you're struggling to find a diet your dog will actually eat or you're looking for personalized nutrition guidance, I'd love to help you create a plan that's tailored specifically to your dog's needs.

When people are new to fresh food diets, I’m often asked what happens when you go away- camping in particular. It definitely takes more planning but it’s still possible to go away and feed your dog the same fresh food diet they have been eating.

For Milo, I pack 1 thawed meal for the first day and then the rest are frozen which will thaw over the course of the trip. I pack his food in his own cooler so that it doesn’t leak in the cooler with the humans food but that’s a step that isn’t necessary. For longer trips this may not be the best set up but for a weekend everything stays good and fresh!

Don’t forget that commercial kibble, canned, dehydrated or freeze dried foods are an amazing option if your dog tolerates them.

🦴 How much calcium should I add to my dog’s diet? 🐶
This is a question I see regularly, and the answers are often very simple:
👉 “Just add 1 tsp per ___ amount of meat.”
The problem?
⚠️ That answer can be extremely misleading and potentially dangerous.

Let’s talk about why 👇
⚖️ Calcium and phosphorus MUST be balanced in the diet. You cannot properly dose calcium without knowing how much phosphorus is already present in the food. For every milligram of Phosphorus, there should be 1.3 milligrams of Calcium.

❓Why does this matter?

When phosphorus is too high, it signals the body to pull calcium from the bones, which can lead to:
- Bone demineralization
- Increased strain on the kidneys

When calcium is too high, it can:
- Bind phosphorus in the gut and reduce absorption
- Interfere with zinc and iron absorption
- Cause skeletal abnormalities in growing dogs 🐾

And here’s where it gets even more complicated 👇

🥩 Different ingredients contain different amounts of phosphorus.
While ALL ingredients contribute phosphorus to some degree, animal proteins tend to contribute the most — especially organs and bone, which are particularly phosphorus-dense.

Even within muscle meat:
🥩 Leaner cuts tend to contain MORE phosphorus per gram
🥓 Fattier cuts tend to contain LESS
Examples:
• 80/20 ground beef → 158mg phosphorus / 100g
• 97/3 ground beef → 205mg phosphorus / 100g

So “1 tsp per pound of meat” may be wildly inappropriate depending on:
✔️ Protein sources
✔️ Fat levels
✔️ Organ content
✔️ Bone content
✔️ The rest of the diet

And not all calcium sources are interchangeable either ⚠️
Different calcium supplements provide different amounts of elemental calcium:
🥚 Eggshell → 401mg Ca / gram
🧪 Calcium carbonate → 352mg Ca / gram
🦴 Bone meal → 300mg Ca / gram
💊 Calcium citrate → 200mg Ca / gram
…which means they should NOT be dosed the same way.

🚫 This is exactly why blanket nutrition advice online can be risky.
✅ Formulation matters.
✅ Ratios matter.
✅ Context matters.

A properly balanced diet is more than adding random supplements — it’s understanding how nutrients interact together

If you’re feeding fresh or homemade meals, calcium should always be calculated based on the phosphorus content of the TOTAL diet — not guessed from a generic chart online.

If you need help calculating nutrient levels in your dog’s diet, a diet analysis is the perfect service for you!

Did you know…? 👀

I have a collection of instant download, balanced dog food recipes available right on my website and it’s been *way* too long since I’ve added to it

I’m really excited to share that TWO brand new recipes are now live!🎉

Both of these recipes are formulated to be under 10% fat (dry matter basis), making them a great option for dogs with a history of pancreatitis who need lower fat diets.

But an important reminder ⬇️
Low fat alone doesn’t automatically make a diet appropriate for dogs with a history of pancreatitis. Nutrient balance, ingredient selection, and your dog’s individual needs all matter just as much.

If you’ve been looking for thoughtfully formulated, ready-to-use recipes, these are ready for you 🐾

Have questions about whether they’re a good fit for your dog? Drop them below or send me a message!

There's lots of new followers so I figured it's time to reintroduce myself

🐾My name is Ashlyn and this handsome boy next to me is my best friend Milo. He's 9 years old and the reason behind this entire business.

🐾While I will always support fresh food diets and do believe they provide the best nutrition (when formulated properly), I will never degrade kibble nor will I speak down on it to promote fresh feeding. Feed the dog in front of you!

🐾I utilize nutritional requirements (NRC) and will use supplements when needed to meet them. Whole foods first, supplements second but I will never compromise the integrity of my formulations by using ingredients with poor bioavailability or absorption. You won't see seeds or spices in my formulations.

🐾Every formulation is completely tailored to your dog. Additionally, your budget, ingredient availability and prep ability are all taken into account when formulating. My goal is always to provide a recipe that fits into your lifestyle and perfectly suits your dogs individual needs.

🐾I'm awful at coming up with what to post on social media. While I love to educate on canine nutrition, the ideas never translate to posts. If you've made it this far, let me know in the comments what you'd like to see and/or learn!
