You'll Feel Better Here We provide the highest quality comprehensive care for your pet and treat them as if they are our own ... like family.

Who We Are:

Our vision was to not only be your neighborhood veterinarian, but to set an example for outstanding veterinary practice in our community. We're a family-owned and operated clinic, and we're bringing back a level of patient care and client service that you don't see enough of these days. We also think it's important to be proactive. That means continuing to educate ourselves and our clients, so together we can give your pet the best possible quality of life. It also means we'll be calling to check in after an appointment, a surgery, or just because. Everyone here is committed to you and your pet. That's why we can confidently say: you'll feel better here. Dr. Shook is a full-time veterinarian and a co-owner, along with her sister, Jenn Shook. She began working at Whetstone Point Inner Harbor Veterinary Hospital in 2003. In 2005 she pursued a lifelong dream when she and her sister purchased the clinic and renamed it CityPets Veterinary Care & Wellness. She enjoys living in Baltimore with her cat Mischief and dog Opie. If you see Dr. Shook and Opie walking around the neighborhood (not like you could miss a Great Dane!), stop by and say hi. Why We're Here:

We promise...

🐾 Has your pet become your full-time shadow this summer? They may notice when your routine changes.

As summer comes to an end and families head back to school, work, and their regular schedules, many pets suddenly find themselves spending more time home alone.

For some dogs—and even some cats—that transition can be stressful.

Signs of separation anxiety or stress may include:
🐶 Excessive barking or vocalizing
🚪 Scratching at doors or windows
🛋️ Destructive chewing or digging
💧 Accidents in the house
🐾 Pacing, panting, or following you everywhere when you're home

The good news? A little preparation now can make the transition much easier.

Here are a few ways to help:
✔️ Start adjusting your pet's routine gradually before schedules change.
✔️ Increase daily exercise to help burn off excess energy.
✔️ Provide puzzle toys, treat dispensers, or other enrichment activities while you're away.
✔️ Practice short departures to help your pet build confidence being alone.

If your pet experiences severe anxiety or their behavior suddenly changes, don't assume they'll "grow out of it." Separation anxiety is a real behavioral condition, and we're here to help. Together, we can discuss strategies and treatment options to help your pet feel more relaxed and confident.

A smooth transition back to routine starts with a little planning—and a lot of patience. ❤️

🐾 August is the perfect time to catch up on your pet's vaccines.

As summer winds down, it's a great reminder to make sure your pet is protected for the months ahead. Whether your pet is due for a booster or has fallen behind on their vaccination schedule, now is the perfect time to get back on track.

Vaccinations help protect your pet from serious, preventable diseases and are one of the simplest ways to support a long, healthy life.

If you're not sure what's due, our team is happy to review your pet's vaccination history and help you create a plan. 💙

🎵🐾 If your pet had an End-of-Summer Playlist... what songs would be on it?

We have a few guesses... 😂

🎶 Who Let the Dogs Out
🎶 Sweet Dreams Are Made of Cheese
🎶 I Still Haven't Found What I'm Sniffing For
🎶 Cats Just Wanna Have Tuna
🎶 Every Snack You Take (I'll Be Watching You)
🎶 Pour Some Treats on Me
🎶 Oops!...I Chewed It Again
🎶 Eye of the Tiger (every cat at 3:00 a.m.)

Somehow, every pet's playlist ends with "Time for Dinner" on repeat. 🍽️😂

What song would your pet have on repeat all summer long?

🏕️🐾 POV: You planned the perfect camping trip... but your pet had other ideas. 😂

You packed the tent.
Your pet packed the chaos.

⛺ "Helping" load the car? ✔️
🐾 Tracking dirt (or somehow finding mud) within the first five minutes? ✔️
👃 Inspecting absolutely everything? ✔️
🐿️ Determined to investigate every critter, bird, or suspicious leaf? ✔️
🍖 Trying to "help" with every meal? ✔️
😴 Completely exhausted after keeping you on your toes all day? Absolutely.

Camping with pets creates some of the best memories—but a little preparation helps keep every adventure safe.

Before you hit the trail, remember to:
💧 Pack plenty of fresh water.
🦟 Keep your pet up to date on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.
🏷️ Make sure their ID tags and microchip information are current.
🩹 Bring a pet first aid kit for unexpected scrapes or paw injuries.
🌿 Keep an eye out for wildlife, toxic plants, and other outdoor hazards.

Here's to muddy paws, curious noses, unforgettable adventures, and the kind of camping stories you'll laugh about for years. 🏕️❤️

In this carousel, you'll discover the truth behind questions like:
🐶 Do dogs only sweat through their paws?
🌞 Do black-coated dogs get hotter than light-colored dogs?

🐾 Scratching is a symptom—not a diagnosis.

If your dog can't stop scratching, chewing their paws, rubbing their face, or getting repeated ear infections, it's easy to assume they just have "sensitive skin."

But the truth is, itching is your dog's way of telling you something isn't right.

August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to talk about what could be causing your pet's discomfort.

Common underlying causes include:
🌿 Environmental allergies (pollen, grasses, mold, dust mites)
🦟 Flea allergy dermatitis—even a single flea bite can trigger intense itching in some dogs
🥩 Food allergies or sensitivities
🦠 Skin infections caused by bacteria or yeast
🕷️ External parasites such as mites
🩺 Hormonal or endocrine disorders, including hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease, which can affect skin and coat health
🧬 Less commonly, autoimmune skin diseases or other chronic skin conditions

While it may be tempting to treat the itch at home, lasting relief starts with identifying the root cause. Every dog is different, which is why the best treatment depends on what's causing the problem in the first place.

If your dog has been scratching more than usual, don't ignore it. We're here to help determine what's behind the itch and create a treatment plan that helps your pet find lasting comfort—not just temporary relief.

Because every dog deserves to feel comfortable in their own skin. ❤️

☀️🐶 Can Dogs Get Sunburned? The answer surprises a lot of pet owners: Yes!

While we often remember sunscreen for ourselves, it's easy to forget that some dogs are just as vulnerable to the sun's harmful rays.

Dogs at the highest risk include:
🐾 White or light-colored coats
🐾 Pink noses and lightly pigmented skin
🐾 Thin-haired or hairless areas, such as the belly, ears, and around the eyes

Just like people, repeated sun exposure can cause painful sunburn and may even increase the risk of certain skin conditions over time.

If your dog loves spending time outdoors, try to provide plenty of shade, avoid the strongest midday sun when possible, and ask your veterinarian whether a pet-safe sunscreen is appropriate for your dog's lifestyle.

A little extra sun protection can go a long way toward keeping your best friend comfortable all summer long. ❤️

🐾 POV: You're just trying to eat a bag of chips...
..and suddenly everyone in the house remembers you exist. 👀🍟

It starts with one stare.

Then another.

Before you know it, you've got a dog sitting perfectly, a cat pretending they don't care (while inching closer), and every crunch somehow sounds like the dinner bell.

We may not know exactly how pets can hear a snack bag from three rooms away... but we're pretty sure it's one of their greatest superpowers. 😂

Whether they're hoping for a bite or simply convinced every snack belongs to them, our pets always know how to make us laugh. ❤️

🐾 Making friends with a dog is a process.

Step 1: Approach slowly.

Step 2: Assume a completely ridiculous position.

Step 3: Hope for tail wags and acceptance. 😂
