Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, BARCS is able to provide medical care to hundreds of animals each year through the Franky Fund. A key part of this effort is our partnerships with local veterinary hospitals and clinics. We are deeply grateful for these partnerships, which help save the lives of thousands of homeless shelter animals in need of emergency and specialized medical care.

This week, we’re sending a heartfelt thank you to the amazing team at Anne Arundel Veterinary Hospital. Their care has made a real difference for countless BARCS animals, including Ponyo, who received urgent treatment—all made possible by the incredible generosity of our Franky Fund supporters.

Sweet and loving 9 year old Ponyo came to BARCS through no fault of his own. During his initial veterinary evaluation, he was very nervous and only allowed for a limited exam of his mouth; otherwise, he was found to be in good health with common age-related changes such as reduced muscle mass. While in a loving foster home, fractured dental pieces were noted; however, due to stress he was not able to be fully assessed without anesthesia. What was clear was that he would need extraction of the fractured pieces and a full dental evaluation once under anesthesia. In the meantime, he was placed on medication to keep him comfortable, but it was ultimately decided that it was in Ponyo’s best interest to be transferred to our Franky Fund partner for specialized assessment and dental surgery, ensuring he remains as healthy as possible, pain-free when eating, and protected from risk of infection.

Under the care of the AAVH team, sweet Ponyo was assessed under anesthesia to determine the full extent of the damage to his teeth and gums. The rotted, broken dental pieces were extracted, and his remaining teeth were carefully polished. He was an excellent patient throughout, and once his treatment was complete, he returned to his foster home feeling much better and ready to keep enjoying his Kong toys. He’s now more comfortable, healthier, and ready for the next chapter of his journey.

And as of today, we are happy to share that Ponyo has found his own loving home. We are so thankful to everyone who helped this sweet pup reach the next step of his journey feeling cared for, supported, and so much better. Happy Tail, Ponyo!

This week, we’re sending a heartfelt thank you to the amazing team at AAnne Arundel Veterinary Hospital. Their care has made a real difference for countless BARCS animals, including Bramble, who received urgent treatment—all made possible by the incredible generosity of our Franky Fund supporters.

Sweet and friendly Bramble was brought to BARCS after being found alone and in need of care and shelter, with a lameness on his back. Upon his initial intake evaluation, a marked weight-bearing lameness was noted in his left hind leg, and due to pain and discomfort, no further testing could be completed at that time, so Bramble was started on medication to help keep him comfortable. Once sedated, our medical team was able to take X-rays of his pelvis and left hind leg, which revealed a transverse femur fracture and a displaced patella. At that point, it was clear that Bramble would need either an amputation or surgical repair to relieve his constant pain, requiring further specialized assessment and imaging to determine the best course of treatment, and Bramble was then transferred to our amazing Franky Fund partner for specialized surgical care and evaluation.

Once under the care of the AAVH team, Bramble was again noted for his social nature, and the team took excellent care of him. Further imaging and an orthopedic assessment were performed, and amputation surgery was determined to be the best course of action. The surgery was successful, and once he was ready to return to BARCS, he was sent back with a care plan and medication to keep him comfortable during recovery.

At BARCS, Bramble was his usual happy self and healing well. It was no surprise that not too long after, Bramble went to his very own loving home, where he can enjoy the comforts of a devoted human caring for him and settle into the ins and outs of tripod life. Happy Tails, Bramble!

Dear Clients and the AAVH Family,

I would like to begin by expressing my sincere gratitude to Dr. Schrank for the incredible care, dedication, and leadership he has given to Anne Arundel Veterinary Hospital over the past 24 years. The trust and relationships he built with our clients and their pets have created a truly special hospital, and we are honored that he has trusted us to continue that legacy.

My name is Dr. Rasamsetti (Dr. Ram), and together with Dr. Sasi Vaddu (Dr. Vaddu), we are honored to step into the role of owners of Anne Arundel Veterinary Hospital. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve this wonderful community and care for the pets who are such an important part of your families.

Our goal is simple: to continue the compassionate, high-quality care that AAVH has always provided to our community’s pets.

You will continue to see the same doctors and trusted team at the hospital.

Dr. Eckert, Dr. Herbert, and Dr. Schrank will remain an important part of our veterinary team and will continue caring for your pets. Dr. Schrank will also remain part of the AAVH family, helping us with surgeries and dentals while working on a more limited schedule.

Dr. Vaddu, who has extensive training in small animal medicine will be working as Research Veterinarian, will support the hospital on an as-needed basis.

I, Dr. Ram, will be present in the hospital four to five days each week, overseeing daily operations while continuing to practice clinical medicine. My professional interests include internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, diagnostics, and urgent care. I have over three years of experience practicing as a veterinarian in Maryland, Ohio, and Virginia, and we are grateful and honored to now call this community our home.

As we move forward, we are also working to expand the level of specialty care available within the hospital. Our goal is to collaborate with board-certified specialists, including a board-certified surgeon and a board-certified internal medicine specialist, so that we can help manage more complex cases locally whenever possible while continuing to provide affordable and compassionate care for our clients and their pets.

In addition, we will continue to offer important surgical services for orthopedic conditions. Dr. Herbert will continue performing the lateral suture technique for cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) repairs.

We are also working to make TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) surgery available through a board-certified surgeon, providing additional treatment options for dogs with cruciate injuries. We will also offer consultation with an internal medicine specialist for complex cases when needed.

Our mission is to ensure that Anne Arundel Veterinary Hospital remains the same with same team to provide thoughtful, compassionate, affordable, and evidence-based care, and where clients feel supported and informed.
