Every second counted to save Eugene’s life...
He was found weak and exhausted on a dirty sidewalk beside a building entrance on a busy street in the United States — a small white-and-brown cat with matted fur, barely able to lift his head as pedestrians passed by.
A rescue volunteer in a bright green vest noticed him, knelt down, and gently stroked his head. He looked up with tired, frightened eyes.
Wrapped carefully in a soft towel, he was lifted gently from the pavement and held securely in caring arms. On the way to the clinic, he rested there, blinking slowly, exhausted but no longer alone.
At the veterinary clinic, the team examined him with care — checking his temperature, his breathing, and his swollen abdomen. He was weak, and his breathing was laboured.
There was a brief moment of hope in the recovery area, surrounded by other rescued cats. Then came the tests, the anxious wait, and the X-rays on the monitor. The vets studied them with concerned faces.
We waited anxiously for his results.
But his prognosis was devastating.
His little body had been through too much and suffered for too long without help. Even with treatment, he wasn’t going to survive. Upon the vets’ recommendation, heartbreakingly, we had to let him go 💔
In his final moments, he was held close and stroked gently. He rested peacefully, calm and safe in caring hands — not alone, and not forgotten.
Animal rescue is NOT easy. It tests us every day — physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially.
After all that panic, worry, and mental juggling, in less than 24 hours of care, we spent over $180 trying to keep Eugene alive.
Then, we had to accept that we were out of options, and say goodbye... and even THAT came with a bill 😓
It’s always hard to ask for donations, but it’s even harder when the promise of a happy ending has been ripped away from them, and us, and you.
But this is the reality of rescue. Every ounce of care we put into trying to save a life costs money, even when we lose them.
We couldn’t save Eugene, but we can honour him by making sure the next animal in desperate need doesn’t have to wait for help until it’s too late.
No animal should have to suffer until they can’t hold on any longer.
If you can, please donate in Eugene’s memory, for the next person who reaches out in a panic with an animal whose life is hanging in the balance.
Rest in Peace, Eugene 🕊️
