Watch the hesitation in that second rep.

Jet goes out again, hears me call, and has a decision to make. This time, he chooses to come back.

These two repetitions show how the outcome of one rep can influence the next choice. The reward for returning and the consequence for ignoring the recall both matter in this example.

The long line gives you a way to follow through while you build recall outside. In this clip, I break down how I use it with Jet and how rewards and consequences influence his choice to return.

This is a later step in the process—your dog should already understand coming when called inside before you add outdoor distractions.

Make coming back worth choosing.

You’re asking your dog to leave something interesting. Give them a reason to feel good about coming back.

You’ll hear my excitement as Jet returns because I want to encourage that choice. I’m showing him how I want him to feel about coming back to me.

Reward the return—not just the arrival.

Watch when I mark Jet’s response: the moment he turns toward me.

That tells him which choice earned the reward. When he reaches me, I reward him—and give him a reason to stay until he’s released.

The return matters. So does what happens next.

Your dog comes inside. Why not outside?

Coming when called in your living room and coming away from an interesting smell are different challenges.

If you want your dog to respond around distractions, they need practice around distractions they can handle. Each successful repetition helps build toward greater distance and bigger challenges.

If your dog comes when you call them inside the house, that's great.

But it doesn't mean they're ready to come running back when they're 20 feet away, sniffing something interesting in the yard.

That's a completely different level of the exercise.

And this is where I see a lot of owners make a mistake:

They go outside and **test their dog's recall instead of training it.**

They wait until their dog is distracted, yell "COME!" from across the yard…and then hope for the best.

Instead, I want you to intentionally teach your dog that the same rules they learned inside still apply when there's **more distance and something else competing for their attention.**

That's exactly what I'm demonstrating in my newest video.

I take Jetpack into my backyard with a long line and show you exactly how I practice the next stage of recall training—including:

🐾 The moments I intentionally choose to call him

🐾 Why I actually WANT him paying attention to something else before I practice a rep

🐾 What I do the instant he turns toward me

🐾 How I use the long line when he ignores the first call

🐾 And two back-to-back reps where you can actually watch his decision-making change

This isn't an edited highlight reel of perfect recalls.

I'm breaking down the individual pieces so you can go outside and practice the same exercise with your own dog.

One important note: If your dog doesn't already understand recall inside your home, don't start here.

This is the next stage—not the first one.

Get the foundation right first, then start adding distance and mild distractions.

And remember:

Don't test your recall. Train your recall.

One of the biggest challenges with dog training videos is that you usually only see the polished version.

The dog already understands the exercise.
The mistakes are edited out.
And it looks much easier than it actually is.

That's not how real training sessions work.

So I decided to give you an inside look at one of mine.

I just uploaded the full, unedited training session where I teach my client's dog, Kimber, the Place command from the beginning.

You'll see:

My body language
My timing
The moments I choose to reward
The moments I simply wait
Those small decisions are often what make the biggest difference in training.
