We had this particular dog come in recently whose last professional groom had been about a year and a half ago. The owners had been trying their best to manage things at home. The economy as we all know has been hard on a lot of families, and they explained that between finances and the dog's anxiety, keeping up with professional grooming had become difficult.

When we saw the condition of the coat, our hearts sank. The matting was so tight that we couldn't simply run a blade underneath. We had to carefully use just the tip of our scissors to create tiny openings, working slowly and methodically to make safe pathways for the clipper blade without risking injury to the skin.

The entire groom was emotional. On one hand, you look at the family and understand. So many people are doing the best they can with what they have right now. On the other hand, you look at the dog. The dog didn't choose the situation. The dog doesn't know about inflation, bills, emergencies or hard times. All they know is how they feel. And that's the part that stays with me. It’s really not a black and white situation.

Sometimes grooming isn't really about hair. It's about being reminded that these animals depend on us for everything. If they could schedule their own appointments or earn their own money, they probably would. Instead, they trust us completely. That's a responsibility we don't think we'll ever stop feeling. And it makes us give our all in this job.😊

One of the most common and most preventable injuries we see this time of year is from burned paw pads. Your dog still needs walks in the summer... but summer walks require summer rules.

Many pet parents don't realize it, but when it's 90°F outside, pavement in direct sunlight can become hot enough to burn your dogs' sensitive paws. We've had dogs come in for grooming with irritated tender paw pads and often the first signs show up later as limping, excessive licking or reluctance to walk.

It's actually easy to avoid this. Before heading out, place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws.

During the hotter months, try to schedule walks before 9 AM or after 7 PM. That way your dog still gets the exercise and bonding time they need without the risk.

And while you're thinking about summer care, don't forget those paws during grooming appointments. Paw pads work hard every day and you need to keep them clean and properly maintained so as to help them stay healthier and more comfortable throughout the season.
