I’m not here to help you fix your horse. I’m not here to help you get a job done with your horse. I am here to help you change yourself and learn to become more effective at discerning what you should be asking of your horse. Only then can you begin to build a relationship that encourages him to start to trust your judgment. When this is in place the need for fixing doesn’t exist. You will then start to realize:
Things like desensitizing and redirecting don’t work. That running a horse in too many mindless circles is in fact a control strategy used which eliminates allowing the horse to have a choice. That disengaging the hindquarters is a skill necessary to potentially save your life but one that teaches the horse nothing and when done too often takes away his dignity. That bending and flexing 99% of the time takes away from straightness and balance. That straightness and balance give back to the horse instead of taking away. That straightness and balance mean the world to him. That there is only black or white not right or wrong. That gray creates confusion for the horse. That the horse has no ego and neither should you when working with him. That everything is connected and the same. That you must trust your horse AND yourself . That you must have faith that the horse will give you back 100 times more than you ever imagined when you earn the right for him to trust your judgment.

The October RPH E-Newsletter is hitting inboxes now! 📬

There's a lot in this one. Robbie shares stories about three horses he's worked with, and what each one taught him about relationship and trust. You'll also find a recap of September's clinics at H&H Arena, Stone Creek, and Ashland Arena, with a few great rider stories.

We're also introducing our new Robbieisms clothing line, featuring some of the sayings you've probably heard Robbie say in the arena. And there's a small hint about what's coming in 2027.

We're always glad to hear how RPH clinics are helping build better relationships. This review comes from Kandace White.

What was the most valuable thing you learned?
"Where do I begin! I learned how to communicate with my horse better and gain a stronger relationship. My horse gained insight on trusting himself and me. He also gained the confidence to work around cattle and become more accustomed to getting a job done!"

What breakthrough did you experience?
"Since my horse was very green, I continue to learn and apply the 3 major laws Robbie discussed in every situation I encounter with such a young horse."

Thank you, Kandace! A green horse finding the confidence to trust himself and his rider around cattle is exactly what it looks like when a relationship is built on clear communication. We love that you're taking what you learned home and using it every day.

Robbie has no interest in being the leader of the herd. Here's why. 🐴

It's one of the most common ideas in horsemanship: be the herd leader and your horse will respect you. Robbie sees it differently.

What he wants looks more like the relationship between a dam and her foal. She guides. She sets clear boundaries. She keeps her foal safe and shows it how to get along in the world. The foal doesn't follow her out of fear. It follows because it trusts her.

That kind of relationship doesn't come from being the boss. It comes from being consistent, fair, and clear, so your horse understands what you're asking and feels safe looking to you for direction. When the horse trusts the human, the confusion goes away and the work gets easier for both of you.

That's the relationship Robbie works toward with every horse, and it starts with the human being willing to change.

Bronya is a barrel racer who keeps coming back to Robbie’s clinics. She was a participant in this past weekend’s Advanced Horsemanship clinic at Ashland Arena in Hartsville, SC.

During the clinic she and Robbie worked on tightening up her turns around each barrel, and letting go of her horse so he could move forward and do his job. Great job, Bronya!

The horse already knew the job. What changed was the human.

A little look at what is happening today at the Advanced Horsemanship Clinic at Ashland Arena!

In this clip, Robbie is working with a participant and her Gypsy on keeping the hindquarters alive through the movement instead of letting them die out.

They are stepping the hindquarters over and flowing straight into the backup, then working on making the transition smoother, softer, and more intentional.

It is not just about getting the maneuver done. It is about keeping the feet available and the communication going from one movement right into the next.

We recently heard from Elise Clark, who rode in Robbie's clinics several years ago. With her permission, we wanted to share part of her note:

"I have not done a clinic with you in quite a few years but have thought about the tools you gave me and how that enabled the relationship I had with this big guy. It gave me confidence and Nemo and I had a great 18 years together."

Elise said goodbye to Nemo this past week. He was 22, still looked good, and kept his mischievous personality to the end. Her grandchildren got to ride and groom him, and she called him the horse of a lifetime.

Notes like this remind us why Robbie teaches the way he does. The goal is not a quick fix for one weekend. It is giving people tools they can keep using, so horse and human understand each other for years to come.

Welcome to all of our new followers! 👋

We've had quite a few new faces join us this month, and we want to say thank you for following Robbie Potter Horsemanship. We're really glad you're here.

For those just getting to know us, Robbie travels throughout the Southeast (NC, SC, AL, VA, & TN) and California, teaching clinics, private sessions, and small group sessions for riders of all levels and disciplines. His focus is on helping the human change so they can communicate clearly with their horse, eliminating confusion and creating clarity for both. Rather than training horses for people, Robbie teaches owners how to understand their horses and build a relationship that carries into everything they do together.

We tend to focus on and obsess over the things we can control; while in the things where we feel out of control, we avoid.

We'll spend hours chasing the right saddle, the right pad, the right supplement, trying to get every detail of our horse's care exactly right.

Meanwhile, the same horse is walking all over us. Pulling on the leadline, leaning into our space, pushing past us at the gate. And somehow that gets written off as just how he is.

More times than not, the saddle was never the problem. A horse who respects your space and moves off a feel doesn't need the perfect gear to prove it. That comes from the relationship, not the tack room.
