Learning about animals can look, feel, and even smell different for every student. CALM Zoo recently welcomed visually impaired students from KCSOS for a Touch Tour, a hands on experience designed to help students build a more complete understanding of animals through touch, texture, shape, size, and smell.
For students who are visually impaired, these sensory experiences can be especially important in helping them conceptualize an animal and understand what it is like beyond what they can hear or read about it.
We’re excited to be testing this experience as we look toward possibly offering Touch Tours during the 2027–2028 school year, creating more opportunities for every student to connect with California’s native wildlife in meaningful ways.
