Our bighorn sheep are back on habitat!

Following a temporary exhibit closure due to rain damage, our bighorn sheep have officially returned to a modified section of their habitat. While extensive restoration work is still ahead, our teams have created a safe space that allows the sheep to enjoy the habitat while long-term repairs continue.

The storm damage impacted several areas of the habitat, and restoration efforts over the coming months will include rebuilding damaged terrain, addressing erosion concerns, restoring vegetation, and making additional infrastructure improvements. We appreciate your patience as this important work continues.

We want to extend a huge thank you to our incredible Maintenance & Operations Team and Animal Care Team for their hard work, dedication, and collaboration. Their efforts made it possible to safely reopen a portion of the habitat and welcome the sheep back outside while the next phase of repairs gets underway.

Be sure to stop by and visit our bighorn sheep, Diane, Sierra, and Emma during your next trip to CALM Zoo!

Did you know the California grizzly bear went extinct in 1924 due to habitat loss and hunting?

As part of CALM Zoo’s Master Plan West Expansion, we are honored to help share the story of this iconic keystone species of California’s ecosystem. The future expansion will feature North American grizzly bears, offering an opportunity to highlight their ecological importance and the vital role their distant relatives once played across our state’s landscapes.

The proposed Flex Bear Habitats of the West Expansion will include three expansive, naturalistic spaces for both black bear and grizzly bear, with enrichment and rotational habitat access designed to reflect how bears naturally live, roam, and explore.

To learn more about the proposed West Expansion and CALM Zoo's long-term plans, visit CALMZoo.org. To explore ways to support the Zoo's growing future and potential ballot measure, visit ProtectCALMZoo.org.

Meet 324, one of CALM Zoo’s two resident California Condors. You may notice the numbered tags attached to their wings during your visit. These identification tags help animal care teams and conservationists easily identify each individual condor and monitor their care and wellbeing.

California condors once nearly disappeared forever. By 1987, only 27 condors remained in the world due to habitat loss, hunting, and lead poisoning. Thanks to conservation efforts and protected breeding programs, the species has slowly begun to recover. Today, California condors remain both federally and state endangered, making every individual bird an important part of the species’ story.

At CALM Zoo, 250 and 324 help inspire guests to learn about wildlife conservation and the importance of protecting endangered species. By caring for these incredible birds and sharing their story, CALM Zoo is proud to support ongoing conservation and education efforts helping secure a future for California condors.

Next time you visit the Zoo, stop by to see 250 and 324 and learn more about these remarkable birds.

A huge thank you to the amazing volunteer group from Capital Insurance Group (CIG) for spending the past couple of days at CALM Zoo helping build an additional permanent shade structure in our equine yard for both Flappy and Peggy, just in time for those warm summer days ahead!

Projects like these make such a meaningful impact for the animals in our care, and we are incredibly grateful for community partners and volunteer groups like CIG who continue to support CALM Zoo through their time, hard work, and generosity.

From all of us at CALM Zoo, thank you for your support and hard work!
