Kern County Animal Services is one of the largest organizations in the Central Valley that rescues, houses and cares for lost and abandoned animals annually, enforces animal-related laws and acts to prevent cruelty to animals. We provide field services to the unincorporated areas of Bakersfield and Kern County. Our field staff works to prevent the spread of Rabies through our Rabies Control Program including enforcing the licensing of dogs, and rabies vaccinations for dogs. Field staff also responds to reports of animal bites and places animals under quarantine when necessary; responds to stray animal calls and attempts to reunite lost pets with their owners through identification to prevent pets from ever entering the shelter. Kern County Animal Services has one shelter located in Bakersfield. We also have a contracted sheltering facility in Lake Isabella. In addition to field and sheltering services, we have a variety of programs to assist the public in being a responsible pet owner and to help shelter pets including:

Low-cost vaccination, licensing and microchipping clinics
Foster Program
Volunteer Program
Spay/Neuter Voucher Program for low-income residents
TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) Program
Safety Net Pet Food Program
General Pet Information and Referral Information for Community Services

It's Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week!

This week we celebrate the incredible veterinary technicians who dedicate their lives to caring for animals who cannot speak for themselves.

Here at KCAS our 2 vet techs are Marissa and Tasha!

From providing medical care and comfort to calming nervous patients and supporting veterinarians through challenging moments, you make a difference every single day.

Working in animal care takes a special kind of heart. It takes strength to face the difficult days, compassion to keep showing up, and an unwavering love for the animals who depend on you.

Thank you for the lives you save and the difference that you make!

Reuben
Male, 3 years, 53 lbs

Short Version: Sweet, Mellow, Affectionate, Knows sit, Positive past experiences with dogs, Urgent placement needed, URI

Reuben is a sweet, mellow boy who needs help getting noticed. He arrived at KCAS on 9/30/26 and is now out of view in the second building, sick with a URI. Despite positive experiences with other dogs during the Streets of Bakersfield program and playgroup, Reuben was placed at risk after a report that he fought with his kennelmate. Unfortunately, no notes documented what happened, so the circumstances are unclear. A volunteer requested reevaluation and extra time for this deserving boy.

When I spent time with Reuben, he was friendly, gentle, and simply wanted affection. He also knows how to sit on command. Reuben deserves to be seen as more than an undocumented incident. Please help Reuben by sharing his story and offering him a chance through adoption, fostering, or rescue before time runs out!

Our Adoptable Dogs Are Hitting the Town TODAY!

Looking to meet your new best friend? Our pups are heading out for an offsite adoption event at the PetSmart at 5601 Calloway, TODAY from Noon to 3pm!

These special events give some of our most overlooked dogs a chance to shine outside the shelter. Many of them have been waiting patiently for their forever homes for no fault of their own! This is their moment to stand out!

Offsite events are a great way to connect in a more relaxed setting, where you can spend time getting to know a smaller group of carefully selected, highly adoptable dogs.

If you're ready to adopt a pet, here's your chance to find your new best friend!

David
Male, 4 years, 87 pounds

Check out his video with !

Short Version: Mellow, People-friendly, Loves cuddles, Relaxed, Keeps to himself around dogs, Suspected potty trained, URI treatment, Urgent placement needed

Meet David, a sweet, mellow boy who just wants a cozy place to relax and someone to cuddle with. He arrived at KCAS on 9/25/26 and recently developed an upper respiratory infection (URI). He is receiving treatment in the sick kennel area, out of public view, and his illness has put him at risk of euthanasia. An extra five days was granted, but time is limited.

David is friendly with people and enjoys taking life easy. He tends to keep to himself around other dogs, though he has done fine sharing a kennelmate. He is also suspected to be potty trained. This chill boy deserves the chance to recover and enjoy life in a loving home. Please like and share David's post to help him find an adopter, foster, or rescue before time runs out!
