Our first hurricane at The PUPStop!
Hurricane Isaias brought a few busy, chaotic days, and our team got straight to work preparing. We moved dogs to safer areas, secured buildings, and did everything we could to protect our pups. We also got our new, ‘still in progress’ Big PUP Barn set up for the more than 30 recently sterilized dogs in our care.
Our people is who made it all happen. Our staff worked hard throughout their shifts, with some volunteering extra time too. And our volunteers?? They showed up in a BIG way! Some left their own hurricane preparations behind and traveled from Pensacola, Fort Walton Beach, Navarre, and other surrounding areas to help us get ready. Some even came back multiple times! From securing buildings to moving dogs and tackling the endless to do list, everyone pitched in wherever they were needed. We truly couldn’t have done it without our dedicated staff and amazing volunteers!!
By Friday morning, Isaias had strengthened to a Category 3, so we boarded up windows and glass doors and moved dogs away from potentially dangerous areas. Some staff members even volunteered to stay on site during the storm to be there for the dogs if needed.
At 6:45 p.m. the power went out, leaving us without lights or Wi-Fi, but our generator kept the main building running. And our dogs??? They did AMAZINGLY!
After the storm, we had downed trees and branches, some fence damage, and a few broken standing pens. Somehow, the trees avoided anything truly valuable… including our beloved polished turd!😂 (If you know, you know. We’re talking about the trailer we evacuated weeks ago!)
Our staff and volunteers came back to help clear trees, cut branches, and clean up the property. We’re still working through cleanup and figuring out how to prepare even better for next time.
The storm affected our people, too. With power out at their homes, we were able to offer staff and volunteers a place to shower, cook a meal, and charge their phones. Sadly, one of our beloved staff members lost their home. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with them and everyone facing damage and loss..
To every staff member and volunteer who helped us prepare and clean up, and to everyone who donated, checked on us, or prayed for us: THANK YOU! We couldn’t have done it without you.
We’re still cleaning up, but we’re grateful our dogs are safe and thankful for everyone who showed up to help!!
