Hey y’all I’ve posted about this before but I’ve had several conversations recently about the future of field trials and how important it is that we continue bringing new people into the sport. Unfortunately a large number of the people involved are getting older and we have lost several in the last few years as well.

A lot of people are interested in field trials, but never try because they think you have to be a professional trainer, own a stable full of horses, or already know everything. The truth is, every single person involved started as a beginner at some point.

AKC pointing breed field trials are one of the best ways to develop and showcase bird dogs while also meeting great people who share the same passion for dogs, bird hunting, training, and competition. There’s truly something special about watching a good dog find birds and do what it was bred to do.

And for anyone intimidated by the horseback side of things don’t be. There are plenty of walking trials all over the country, and even at horseback trials there are often walking handlers competing successfully. You absolutely do not have to own a horse to get started in this sport.

At Oak Run Kennels, we want to encourage more people to get involved. Whether you have a young puppy, a started dog, or you’re just curious about the sport, we’re always happy to help mentor new people, answer questions, and point folks in the right direction.

Field trials survive because experienced people take the time to help newcomers learn the ropes. If you’ve ever thought about trying it, come out to a trial sometime. Ask questions. Watch dogs run. Meet people. You might just fall in love with it like the rest of us did.

There is a last minute addendum to the Farm Bill that would ban the use of live animals being used for dog training. Obviously, an issue for those of us who participate in hunt tests, field trials, or hunt/train at sporting clubs.

Please consider the filling out the attached letter from Sportsman’s Alliance (link in comments). Once you add your zip code, it will populate with your Senator’s information. Hopefully, the language can be amended in the Senate.
