This right here is exactly why we maintain a small barn and tailor our program to each individual! Every horse deserves a chance at success, not flunked out if they don’t fit the right cookie cutter program🫶

I think one of the biggest problems in the performance horse industry right now is that too many horses are being fit into programs… instead of programs being fit to the horse.

And because of that, a lot of really nice c**ts fail out of programs they maybe never should’ve failed out of in the first place.

Now — are there horses that truly do not make futurity horses?

Absolutely.

Some horses mentally cannot handle that much pressure that soon. Some horses mature slower. Some horses need more confidence before more intensity. Some horses simply need more time for the pieces to come together.

But I also think there are just as many trainers who box those c**ts in because they only know how to train one way, on one timeline, inside one system. If they even have a system.

And in my opinion, that fails both the horse and the owner.

A lot of programs today are basically:
“Here is my system. Horses either fit it or they don’t.”

But horsemanship should not work that way.

Some horses are naturally gritty and fast-thinking and can fly through a program. Others are more sensitive mentally and need things presented differently. Some need slower progression in certain spots and can advance quickly in others.

That does NOT automatically mean they lack talent.

Some horses are forgiving enough to survive mediocre programs. Others require a rider and trainer capable of staying mentally ahead of them every step of the way.

I believe my job as a trainer is to get along with everything — and do the best I can by the horse in front of me.

They cannot all take the same timeline.
They do not all learn the same way. Yes, they all learn from the release, but some need more wash/rinse/repeat.
They do not all mentally handle pressure the same way.

And honestly? That’s normal.

Training for winning, imo, should never override training for safety, confidence, understanding, and longevity.

Because running a pattern is not the same thing as being truly trained.

In general, a correctly started c**t with a solid 90 rides — one that is soft, correct, round in a circle, understanding pressure, taking guidance, searching for release, and mentally handling life well — should be capable of beginning to learn a barrel pattern.

Within another 60 days, many of those horses should be capable of lightly exhibitioning with the trainer if the progression has been thoughtful and honest.

Some may progress faster. Some may need more time.

The point is thoughtful, honest progression — not forcing every horse into the same calendar, while also not leaving horses sitting in limbo indefinitely with no measurable forward progress.

That doesn’t mean the horse is finished.
It doesn’t mean the horse is futurity-ready tomorrow.
And it definitely doesn’t mean the horse should be shoved through holes mentally just to stay on someone else’s timeline.

Owners also deserve honesty.

Not every horse has incentives attached to it. And if you’re a trainer giving preference to the incentive horses, while holding the non-incentive horses hostage because there’s less money in them if they win — be honest and tell your clients you would rather ride incentive horses.

Don’t milk people along for the steady paycheck.

A horse does not have to be futurity caliber to deserve honest training and forward progress.

Not every owner wants a futurity champion.
A lot of people simply want a safe, confident, fun, reliable 3D horse they enjoy riding.

Sometimes I think — and know — those owners are getting financially and emotionally strung along because the industry has normalized endless timelines, poor communication, and systems that prioritize incentivized horses over ordinary clients.

“Slow” is not always thoughtful horsemanship.
And “fast” is not always bad horsemanship either.

Thoughtful progression matters.

To me, good training means reading the horse honestly enough to know when to push, when to wait, when to simplify something, and when to change the approach completely.

Because horses are individuals.
Not assembly lines.

This one is cool! He first got his start under hunt seat tack where he thrived before a client brought him to me for a go at the barrel side of things. He is a lovely uphill and lofty mover! (Like seriously he is SO comfy to ride!) Ty could easily make a stellar over fences horse or eventer but shows a TON of promise in the barrel pen as well! He’s got a big cool move on the backside and has the makings of a pro rodeo/1D prospect! Ty is not watchy and more whoa than go when off the barrel pattern. He will likely finish out to be push style but does not want to be a barrel hitter. He is non pro/youth suitable! He can take a joke and has never offered any funny business. Ty has a HUGE personality and loves his people! I hate to see this one go but owners are moving in a different direction! I would LOVE to keep him in my barn to finish and/or Futurity for someone however! If barrels or English isn’t your jam, this guy would make a fabulous partner on the ranch, trail rider, or lesson horse! He’s got all the pieces and parts that everyone wants and is ready to be finished out your way!

Ty is sound and requires no maintenance other than plain steel shoes up front (we keep all of our shod). He is a chunky boy and built to last! No vices, quirks, or bad habits. PPEs always welcome!

🚨Owners want her moved THIS WEEK! If she wasn’t in your range before, she may be now!🚨

First off, I have no idea how I still have this mare! She’s bred to the nines, stunning to look at, nicely broke, started on the pattern, and sound! Like what more could you want??!!

I’ve got fresh video linked below ⬇️ and pics were taken today, 5/18! Don’t let Jockey Club papers scare you, she is eligible for a number with AQHA and will make some bad a$$ appendix babies!!! Ride her now, breed her later! Not to mention she’s already got 40k in earnings to secure her spot as a producer!

All the hard work is done on the pattern and she’s ready to be hauled and seasoned! Automatic type ride and has plenty of go when you want it! Rides around in a snaffle and frames up nicely. If barrels aren’t your jam, she’d make a heck of a using horse, play day mount, trail riding partner, jumper, or eventer!

She is sound and has never been injected or had an injury! No vices or quirks! Not jumpy or spooky! She does have a little bit of a motor, but no funny business and rides around in a snaffle with a great whoa. She is easy to have around, a team player, and has an in your pocket personality!

Owners need the stall and that is why she is offered! Come try her and you won’t be disappointed! For those that are out of state, we’ve got TONS of pics and video so you can be confident in your decision! PPE’s welcome as always!

She’s perfectly put together, she’s got chrome, she’s got a puppy dog personality, she’s safe, she’s sound, she’s cruising a nice set, and she’s incredibly bred to boot! I’m not sure what else someone could want!

Phoenix has a super in your pocket personality and wants to please. She is quiet and enjoys getting loved on! She doesn’t offer any funny business under saddle and all the hard work is done! She’s cruising a nice pattern and ready to have speed added! I could also see her making a fabulous pole horse! Phoenix is that easy automatic style where you can just sit there and let her work! She is handy youth suitable and could easily be finished out by a non pro; she has a motor so I would not suggest her for a beginner but does not offer any funny business. She is not spooky or watchy and could handle the rodeo scene as well. She has never been injected and has no maintenance other than front shoes. No vices or quirks! PPEs are always welcome!

It’s been a BUSY week over here at FPH! We would like to congratulate the new owners of these three! Two of them didn’t even make it to public market!

NORTHPARK- Congrats Amanda! We couldn’t have asked for a more loving spot for her! We are so glad we could play a small roll in getting you back on a horse! It has been an absolute pleasure and we are grateful to have met such amazing people!

CASTAGNO- Well we didn’t plan to sell this one but a big congrats to Lana! When she reached out looking for a horse, we knew we had just the perfect guy that we had been holding back personally. A few texts back and forth and he found his forever home with one of our longtime clients!

I DREAMED I STREAKED- Everyone one knows and loves this one… After an injury derailed our plans for him last year, he went out on lease to rehab with an absolutely incredible family! Long story short, a kiddo found his heart horse and he is staying with them permanently❤️

It’s that time of year when the Futurity c**ts really start to blossom! We picked this one because we thought she would turn out super similar to Jobu and boy were we right!
