On September 11, 2001, some of the responders who answered the call walked on four legs.

In the hours and days following the attacks, specially trained dogs and their handlers arrived at Ground Zero to take on work few could imagine. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum estimates that more than 300 working dogs ultimately assisted in search, rescue, recovery or therapy efforts there.

Search-and-rescue dogs were trained to detect the scent of living people beneath wreckage. They climbed across unstable debris alongside their handlers, searching for survivors in an environment filled with dust, smoke and hazards. One of those dogs helped locate the last living person rescued from Ground Zero, 27 hours after the towers collapsed.

As the possibility of finding survivors diminished, the mission increasingly became one of recovery.

But searching the rubble wasn't the only role dogs played.

Therapy and comfort dogs were also brought to the site, offering exhausted firefighters, police officers, rescue workers and others brief moments of comfort amid unimaginable devastation. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum describes these dogs as providing moments of respite for people enduring extraordinarily long hours at the site.

Some individual stories remain especially powerful.

Nikie, a Golden Retriever working with handler Frank Shane, wore protective booties while moving through Ground Zero and respite centers. Nikie continued serving throughout the months-long recovery operation. Those worn boots are now preserved in the collection of the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

Sirius, a four-year-old Labrador Retriever partnered with Port Authority Police Officer David Lim, was at the World Trade Center when the attacks occurred. Sirius was killed that day and is remembered by the Museum as the only police dog killed in the attacks.

Twenty-five years later, the photographs remain extraordinary: dogs climbing over twisted debris beside their handlers, searching wherever they were asked to search.

They didn't understand the history unfolding around them.

They simply knew they had a job to do.

Today, we remember the dogs of 9/11 and the handlers who walked beside them.

Buds! 😊
