To celebrate Misty Eyes Animals Center’s 15th anniversary, we are looking back at 15 success stories. Baxter is our Hoosier Transplant. 🐶

Baxter is a senior Shih Tzu mix who was born and raised in Florida. Sadly, his owner developed dementia and had to return to Indiana to be cared for by her family. Baxter came along, of course, and is now a Hoosier!

The family of Baxter’s owner did the best they could for him after his owner passed away. They loved him almost as much as his “mom” did, but, sadly, their own dog, a much larger, younger breed, began to bully him. For his safety, the family decided it would be best to find Baxter a new home. He was surrendered to Misty Eyes Animal Center in July 2023.

Although he was a well cared for and much loved little guy most of his life, Baxter’s mom’s illness prevented him from receiving regular care during the past few years. So, when Baxter came to Misty Eyes and was placed in a foster home, he was scheduled for a geriatric workup right away. The good news is that our wonderful vet partners found him to be reasonably healthy with some skin and fur issues due to nutritional needs. Of course, like so many senior, small breed dogs, he had some dental disease, which could eventually impact his overall health. Thanks to our grant from the Grey Muzzle Organization, Baxter was able to be checked out medically and to have his needed dental surgery. He recovered well and is, today, a happy, healthy boy.

The stars must have been in alignment for Baxter. While at our adoption center shortly after coming to Misty Eyes, one of our volunteers met him and decided that she wanted to adopt him. She and her family had previously adopted Kesha, a little tripod terrier mix, who also was helped by the Grey Muzzle Organization grant several years ago. They are truly a Grey Muzzle Organization family!

After being with us for only a month, Baxter was adopted and went to his new forever home in August of this year. He and his adopted sister, Kesha, are receiving the best of care in their golden years and are both happy, cherished little dogs. Thank you Grey Muzzle Organization!

To celebrate Misty Eyes Animals Center’s 15th anniversary, we are looking back at 15 success stories. Our next is JAX: From The End, Back To A New Beginning

Over a four year period, Jax, a 7.5-year-old Doberman Pinscher, was picked up six times as a stray and found himself at the local animal shelter. The seventh time he escaped his home, he was attacked by another dog, and his owner surrendered him to the shelter.

While his dog attack injuries weren’t severe, the shelter veterinarian did find that Jax had a luxating right hip, probably due to an old injury. If the shelter could not find a rescue willing to take Jax, he was to be euthanized. Literally just hours from the end for him, Jax was taken from the shelter by Misty Eyes Animal Center in late December 2022.

After consulting with our veterinary partners, it was determined that Jax would require FHO (femoral head ostectomy) surgery to repair the damage to his hip, but he was not in the best condition. He was underweight and needed some time for his dog bite injuries to heal. Given time, TLC and good nutrition, Jax was ready for his FHO surgery in February of this year.

Following successful surgery, Jax needed about six weeks to recover. It was a difficult time for him at first, but he was up to the challenge, and his recovery went well. Although he is a little battle-scarred, Jax is a very handsome older gentleman. Our next hurdle was to find a family familiar with the breed who would be willing to give an older dog with a bit of a sketchy history a home.

Jax’s new beginning began in May 2023 when he was adopted by a family experienced and in love with the Doberman Pinscher breed. He is now a part of a close family who understand him and are providing him the attention and care he so needed.

The medical care Jax required was not inexpensive. Because of the generosity of our loyal donors and supporters, we are able to provide surgical and medical treatment animals like Jax.

To celebrate Misty Eyes Animals Center’s 15th anniversary, we are looking back at 15 success stories. Next up is Suzy one of our “gray muzzles” 🐾

Misty Eyes Animal Center has been a grateful recipient of grants from The Grey Muzzle Organization to provide both medical and dental care for senior dogs in our rescue program. Every year, Misty Eyes opens its doors to senior pets, many of whom require blood work, dental care, and extensive medical treatment to improve their quality of life. Grey Muzzle grants support the care of these senior dogs, improving their health and chances for adoption. For those dogs not deemed adoptable, the grants help to provide hospice care to ensure quality of life for those senior dogs taken into our sanctuary foster program.

Misty Eyes is a 100% volunteer-based animal rescue and humane education center located in Avon, Indiana (just five miles west of Indianapolis). Founded in 2011, it initially took in pets that the county shelter and other local agencies could no longer handle, but has since expanded to work with rural, under-resourced agencies across Indiana that are struggling with pet overpopulation. Many of the pets transferred to the rescue are seniors with medical needs that these shelters do not have the resources to help. Misty Eyes has a well-earned reputation of not turning away senior dogs due to their need for extensive medical intervention.

For 15 years of Misty Eyes, we are asking everyone to donate $15 if they can. One dollar for each year we have been helping animals. To join in visit: http://weblink.donorperfect.com/15th-anniversary

To celebrate Misty Eyes Animals Center’s 15th anniversary, we are looking back at 15 success stories. Next up is Kesha who has a rags to riches story to tell. 🐶🐾

Kesha is an 8-year-old wire-haired terrier mix girl who was abandoned in a home with another senior, larger dog. Both dogs were taken to a local animal shelter where it was determined that they were not adoptable and would need assistance from a rescue. Misty Eyes took in both dogs and placed them in foster homes to begin their journey back to being well-cared-for, loved pets.

On intake, Kesha weighed only 6.7 lb. She was skin and bones. She also had a problem with her back right leg. Our wonderful vet staff examined her and found that she had an old injury to the back leg, which could not be repaired; it would need to be amputated. That would have to wait, though, because Kesha was seriously anemic. After running tests to determine the cause of Kesha’s anemia, it was found that she has mild Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. With medication and frequent CBC checks, Kesha put on weight – getting to nearly 12 lb. -- and was stable enough to undergo the leg amputation. The surgery went well, and Kesha quickly adapted to being a tripod dog.

Because her blood counts continued to fluctuate, Kesha was referred to a veterinary internal medicine specialist. For nearly a year-and-a-helf, Kesha was treated for her condition. We were beginning to think that she might be unadoptable and would need to become a sanctuary dog. However, due to continued treatment with immunosuppresant medication, Kesha reached a point where her blood counts were remaining relatively stable, and the decision was made to try to find her a forever home.

Throughout her ordeal, Kesha was always a sweet, loving little dog who wanted nothing more than to spend time with her humans. Being a lap dog was her greatest wish. As is sometimes the case with rescue adoptions, the perfect family applied to adopt Kesha. They were aware of her medical history and were more than willing to take over her care. Additionally, she would be the only dog in the home, so she would receive all the attention she could ever want. In November 2022, Kesha was adopted and went to her new home. She is living her idea of the good life and loving it. She is cherished, is a member of the family and gets all the lap time she wants.

Grants from The Grey Muzzle Organization enable Misty Eyes to take on more difficult medical cases like Kesha’s so that these senior dogs can be adopted and live their golden years as treasured family members.

Tonight during our open hours (5:00 to 7:00 pm) we have a special visitor - Meet Sammy! 🐶🐾

Sammy is a lovable Lab/Shepherd mix who's five years old and tipping the scales at a solid 80 pounds of pure joy! This friendly and energetic boy has had quite the journey, arriving at Misty Eyes from an overcrowded shelter alongside his siblings.

Although he was adopted as a puppy, life threw a curveball, and he found himself back in the care of our dedicated team-through no fault of his own! Now, in his foster home, Sammy is wagging his tail with delight as he polishes up his house manners, proving that practice makes paw-fect! Sammy adores going on walks and spending quality time with his foster family, ready to bring boundless happiness to a forever home.

Although he is fine with most people, Sammy doesn't appreciate other animals, so will need to be the only pet in the home. He would be a great fit for a country home with property where he can expend his energy. If you would like an active, loyal companion, please submit an adoption application for Sammy online at https://www.mistyeyes.org/adoptionapplication
