It’s Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week, and we want to thank all of our veterinary assistants who are invaluable to our practice!
You can see some of the tasks our assistants perform when we’re at your barn, such as:

✅ Safely handling and preparing patients for procedures

✅ Monitoring patients under sedation and anesthesia and advocating for their needs

✅ Setting up equipment and helping with diagnostics
✅ Communicating with clients on the phone and on the farm

But our assistants do even more behind the scenes:

✅Maintaining equipment to keep it in perfect shape

✅ Keeping records up to date and complete

✅ Helping with scheduling logistics

✅ Checking inventory and stocking trucks with the necessary supplies

✅ Cleaning and maintaining biosecurity protocols between appointments

✅ Helping our veterinarians stay sane! 😜

Our assistants are truly one of our strongest assets, and we couldn’t practice such a high level of medicine without them!

Happy Feel Good Friday!

Horses have very strong eyelid muscles that are especially hard to open when they are squinted shut from pain. This can make administering topical medications difficult, even for the nicest horses.
Luckily, we have a lot of tricks up our sleeves to help us fix eyeball issues!

When this patient was diagnosed with a stromal abscess (an abscess within the cornea), his owners knew he was going to resist the treatment regimen. Dr. Lauren suggested a Subpalpebral Lavage catheter (SPL).

An SPL is essentially a long, narrow tube. One end is inserted under the eyelid of the affected eye. The other end of the tube is fixed near the withers. This way medications can be administered into the far end of the tube and pushed onto the surface of the eye, without having to hold open the eyelids.

With diligent monitoring of the SPL catheter, Sunny’s stromal abscess slowly improved, and he was able to return to his herd!

Henderson Equine Clinic had a great day at the Genesee Valley Hunt Races this weekend! We are proud to be the attending veterinarians and work with the National Steeplechase Association officials to keep everyone as safe as possible.
It was great to see so many of our clients enjoying the event as well!

Do you know what the difference is between these two groups of blood samples?
Both samples were taken on the same day and spun in the centrifuge in the same way in order to separate the clot (bottom) from the serum (top).

The difference is that the blood sample on the left was taken from horses, and the sample on the right was taken from donkeys.

Horse serum is more yellow, and donkey serum has a whiteish hue because they each metabolize their food differently. Horse digestion releases higher amounts of pigmented byproducts into their bloodstream, which leads to this yellow color.

This difference serves as a visual reminder that donkeys are a completely different species than horses, and while they seem very similar on the outside, they have some important behavioral and nutritional differences that need to be addressed.

The good news: we love seeing our donkey patients just as much as our horse patients, and we're happy to help you navigate these differences!

This week’s Feel Good Friday is bittersweet.

When Finnegan’s mom had to be euthanized due to severe complications during his birth, he was left with a very big problem. He needed a foster mom, and time was of the essence.

Newborn foals need to receive colostrum, mare’s milk produced within the early hours of the foal’s life, which contains important antibodies that allow them to form their immune system. They also need to nurse very frequently, especially in their first few weeks. Luckily, Dr. Lauren was quick-thinking and collected colostrum from Finnegan’s mom, Charlotte, prior to euthanasia. We were also grateful that Honey Locust Farm was willing to provide some of their high quality, frozen colostrum so that Finnegan’s humans could maintain a rigorous feeding schedule over the next few days.

While Finnegan’s team of caretakers worked tirelessly to provide what he needed to survive the first days of his life, they knew that what he truly needed was a mom. Foals benefit from companionship and a horsie role model that can teach them appropriate behavior. Heavensent Nursemares LLC was able to provide an experienced nursemare named Southern Charmer, who happily adopted Finnegan.

Finnegan is still thriving with his adoptive mom and we are looking forward to watching him grow. It just goes to show that it truly takes a village!
