Aquila and Cassiopeia cage had baby noises so I gave them an hour and then went in to find babies! Aquila has been due for a few days now so we were waiting not so patiently. Unfortunately it was a large litter and a long labor. Aquila is doing great very bouncy and excited to get out.
She gave birth to 14, 6 were passed already, one had to be euthanized due to birth injuries incompatible with life. Of the 8 surviving 5 had full and happy bellies, 3 still needed to be fed and one of them had a bit of a swollen face.
This Isn't uncommon in large litters and long labors. If one pup gets stuck the rest can lose oxygen. Mom likely ran out of energy before being able to deliver the whole litter and so some of them were stillborn.
That's when my job as a breeder and the one responsible for her comes in! I gave her a quick health check, checked all the pups and when I realized how difficult the labor was I re did her nest to remove passed pups, and check for lost pups.
I found 2 tangled up in bedding pushed to the side during the chaos and grabbed everyone to warm them up to my skin while she got her snack and break. I gave her and her sister some honey water some oats and a few cookies, she checked a few times as I was taking care of everything but couldn't be happier with her food.
I replaced bedding that was soiled and made sure to provide some new bedding for the babies. We had 5 full bellies and 3 weren't so we gave everyone who was OK back and warmed up those who were cold real quick with my breath. Mom and Sis got to get some alone time and a chance to drink and eat after all that work caring for babies.
Cassiopeia is very affectionate and helping her sister raise her babies till she has her own and they likely co raise. Cassi is likely gonna have hers very soon based off of how anxious she was with Aquilas babies. Aquila couldn't care less when there are snacks in front of her lol. All who are well are well!
