Departures from the Breed Standard: The Fox Trot

The MFTHBA Education Committee is continuing its educational series with its third installment: Departures from the Breed Standard.

Earlier in our What Judges Look For: The Fox Trot series, we broke down the order judges use when evaluating the Fox Trot:

1. Rhythm first. Is the horse performing the correct broken diagonal gait?

2. Hindquarters second. Once the rhythm is established, judges evaluate how the horse uses its rear end.

3. Front end third. Judges then look for efficient forward reach from the shoulder with minimal wasted motion.

4. Animation last. Headshake, tail movement and expression should be the natural result of correct gait mechanics—not a substitute for them.

But what happens when the rhythm or mechanics begin to depart from the ideal?

In this carousel, we're taking a closer look at several Departures from the Breed Standard, including the Long Trot, Square Trot, Slick Trot, Rack and Flat Pace.

The purpose isn't simply to label a gait as right or wrong. A horse can be somewhat slick or somewhat trotty and still be Fox Trotting. Instead, learning to recognize these variations helps us better understand what makes the ideal Fox Trot the standard.

And it brings us back to the same place we started: Rhythm first.

The Fox Trot is a broken diagonal gait, with each front foot moving a split second before the opposite rear foot. Once we identify the gait, we can begin evaluating how well it's performed.

First identify the gait. Then evaluate its quality.
