Shar-Pei confidence: 100%. Grace: 0%. 💀😂

First the windshield… then the trailer. Apparently, learning the hard way takes TWO lessons. 🐾

Which exit was worse? 😂

Sent my Peis to obedience school
and somehow they came back with gravity suction boots and a software update. Now they’re violating three laws of physics like it’s extra credit. 😂💀🐾

Dad’s got a big head and even bigger dad jokes. 😂🐾 The puppies didn’t inherit his wisdom… just the wobble! What’s your best dog joke?

Growing wrinkles is a full-time job. 😂🐾

That wrinkly puppy photo can hide a lot of vet bills.

I love this breed with my whole heart. Which is exactly why I won't sugarcoat it.

Shar-Pei eyes can roll inward. Entropion. It often needs surgery, sometimes more than once. Their ears are tight little tunnels that infections love. The skin can be a part-time job. And Shar-Pei fever is real in some lines.

None of that means you shouldn't get one. It means the breeder matters more than the puppy pictures do.

Here's what legit health testing looks like, and how you check it:

1. Papers you can verify yourself. Ask for the parents' registered names, then look them up on the OFA database. Hips, patellas, eye exams. Takes five minutes on your phone.

2. Straight answers about eyes. Ask if either parent needed tacking or entropion surgery. A health-first breeder tells you plainly, because they'd rather you know now.

3. One question that tells you almost everything. "What health problems run in your lines?" Every line has something. An answer of "none" means they're not looking or not telling.

The real test is how your questions land. A breeder working for this breed likes a buyer who asks hard things. Someone selling wrinkles gets defensive. Actually, cagey is the better word. They change the subject.

These dogs are a gift. The folded-up grumpy faces, the stubborn loyalty, all of it. Worth protecting with ten minutes of homework.

If you've got a Pei, what do you wish you'd asked before bringing yours home?

If asking about a puppy makes you nervous, read this.

Half the messages I get start with "sorry to bother you."

You're not bothering me. There are three steps and not one of them is a test.

1. Three questions. Where the pup will live, who's home during the day, and whether you've had a stubborn wrinkly dog before. Honest answers help me match you with the right pup, that's all they're for.

2. A phone call. Usually me on the porch with a Pei snoring somewhere behind me. Last one I did, Willow barked at the chicken coop the whole time. We just talk. Ask the awkward stuff.

3. A deposit. This is the part that scares people and it's actually the kindest step. It holds your pup, I stop taking inquiries on that baby, and you can breathe. It protects you too, honestly.

I set it up this way because these dogs become family, and I pray every one of them lands somewhere they're loved.

So if you've been sitting on a message for weeks, send it.

Worst case, we end up talking about wrinkles for an hour.

By the time puppy training starts, the biggest work is already done.

I didn't know that with my first litter. I figured pups grow into their personality and classes handle the rest.

Then I learned about the handling window. Those first several weeks where a puppy decides what the world is.

It closes fast. Weeks, not months.

So now every pup here gets held every single day. Paws touched, ears rubbed, wrinkles counted (I lose track somewhere around the neck).

New floors, new sounds, my muddy boots, the vacuum.

Shar-Peis need it more than anybody. They come wired a little reserved, and a pup who was never handled young can stay suspicious of hands for years.

Honestly, it mostly looks like me sitting on the kitchen floor with a sleepy puppy in my lap. Doesn't feel like work at all.

God packs a lot of a dog's whole life into those few short weeks. I just try not to waste them.

If you're picking up a pup at 8 weeks, ask the breeder what handling looked like before you got there. That answer tells you more than the pedigree.

Does your dog hate having their paws touched? Now you know where that probably started. Tell me about yours.

Before you send a deposit on a puppy, ask three things.

I raise Shar-Peis. Wrinkly, stubborn, wonderful. And I'd want every buyer asking me these.

1. Ask to see the parents.

In person if you can, video call if you can't. Look at their skin, their eyes, how they act around people. A breeder who won't show you the parents is answering your question anyway.

2. Ask for the health testing. The actual paperwork.

"Vet checked" is a sentence. Records are proof. With Peis especially, you want eyes and skin history, because this breed will humble you fast if you skip that.

3. Ask where the puppies sleep.

This one matters more than people think. A puppy raised in the house, hearing dishes clatter and kids holler, comes to you already halfway brave. One raised out in a quiet shed is starting from behind. We had a litter years back that slept ten feet from the coffee pot and honestly they turned out the most unbothered dogs we've ever had.

A good breeder won't flinch at any of this. Most of us light up when somebody finally asks.

If you've got a question you wish you'd asked before bringing your dog home, I'd love to hear it.

One question makes a bad Shar-Pei breeder go real quiet.

"Can I meet the parents?"

That's it. That's the whole test.

I know it feels pushy to ask. Like you're accusing somebody of something. Ask anyway.

A good breeder lights up when you ask. They want you to see mama's skin, her eyes, how she acts when a stranger walks in. They're proud of her.

The other kind has a reason ready. She's at a cousin's place. She doesn't do well with visitors. You can see pictures.

Here's why it matters with this breed more than almost any other. Peis can come with skin trouble, eye trouble, ear trouble, and you'll be the one living with all of it for the next ten years or more. The parents are the honest preview. Everything else is just talk.

Wrinkly puppies are cute enough to make anybody skip the hard questions. I get it. Don't.

If they won't show you where that puppy came from, they're hiding something, and it usually ends up being your vet bill.

Did anybody ask to meet the parents before bringing their Pei home? I'd love to hear how it went.
