Service Dog vs. Therapy Dog
Do You Know the Difference?

They may both be incredible dogs, but they have very different jobs!

Service Dogs are individually trained to perform specific tasks for a person with a disability. Their job is focused on helping their handler navigate everyday life.

Therapy Dogs work with their owners to provide comfort and support to other people in places like schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities. Therapy dogs do not have the same public-access rights as service dogs.

Both require solid obedience, good manners, confidence, and the ability to remain calm around distractions.

No matter the job, it all starts with the right training and a strong dog-and-handler team.

Did you know the difference?

A Solid Recall Can Change Everything

“Come” shouldn’t be a suggestion, it should be a reliable response you can trust in any situation. A strong recall gives your dog more freedom to explore while giving you peace of mind that they’ll return to you, even with distractions around.

Start small in a quiet environment, gradually increase distance, and slowly introduce distractions. Consistency and patience are key to building a recall that truly sticks. A great recall isn’t just convenient, it’s one of the most valuable skills you can teach your dog.

If you’re struggling with recall or want to build a stronger foundation with your dog, we can help.

Playtime Is More Than Just Fun!

Playing with your dog is a great way to provide mental stimulation while strengthening your bond.

Games like tug, fetch, hide-and-seek, enrichment toys, or even practicing commands during play encourage your dog to think, focus, and engage with you. A little play can work both the body AND the brain.

So grab their favorite toy and make training feel like a game!

✨ Impulse Control Is One of the Most Important Skills You Can Teach Your Dog ✨

A well-trained dog isn't just one that knows "sit." A well-trained dog knows how to stop, think, and make good decisions even when distractions are everywhere!

Impulse control helps prevent:
✔ Jumping on guests
✔ Door rushing
✔ Pulling on the leash
✔ Chasing wildlife
✔ Counter surfing
✔ Reacting to other dogs
✔ Breaking commands when excited

Teaching a dog to stay calm before acting creates confidence, better manners, and more freedom in everyday life. Because the goal isn't simply obedience, it's a dog that makes better choices.

Dogs Don't Think Like Humans and That's Okay!

One of the biggest mistakes dog owners make is expecting their dog to reason like a person.

Dogs live in the moment. They learn through association, timing, repetition, and consequences. They aren't trying to be stubborn, spiteful, or dominant, they simply repeat behaviors that have worked for them in the past.

When owners learn how dogs actually process information, training becomes clearer, communication improves, and frustrating behaviors begin to disappear. The better you understand your dog, the better your dog will understand you!

Training starts with communication, let us help you communicate with your dog and get lasting behavior change!

The Best-Trained Dogs Aren't Perfect... They're Consistent!

A well-behaved dog isn't created in a single lesson, it's built through small, consistent moments every day.

- Waiting politely at door
-Walking calmly on a leash
- Listening around distractions
- Making good choices at home

Those little wins add up to big results.
