Vix was 9 months old and an intact female Belgian Malinois when she was originally brought into AVES. It was two days until Christmas, and she was found by a good samaritan and taken to general practitioner, who identified pretty extensive pelvic fractures and recommended referral to AVES for more advanced care and support.

Our ER doctor and support staff immediately noticed how sweet and cooperative she was, despite being in a lot of pain from her injuries. Unfortunately, the person who found her was not able to pay for the extensive care that would be required for Vix, so she was surrendered to AVES while we tried to find her owner.
Dr. Kalis, one of our board certified surgeons, ended up coming in on one of his days off over the holiday and performed the 8-9 hour surgery to repair her pelvis. She did amazing and immediately was eager to get up and walk with sling assistance.

By this time, one of our ER Doctors, Dr. Inglis had fallen head over heels for Vix and she already owned a Malinois, so she was familiar with the breed and had experience with pets recovering from orthopedic injuries that required rehab and close monitoring.

Vix spent her 8 weeks of crate rest to let her pelvis heal with Dr. Inglis. At her two month recheck, Dr. Kalis gave her the all clear to start exercising and she's taken off running since then!

She was back at AVES again to get spayed and have a prophylactic gastropexy with Dr. Strelchik, another one of AVES' boarded surgeons, but is otherwise loving her life with Dr. Inglis and her other dogs.

One of her new favorite things is doing parkour off the furniture. :)

What amazing teamwork between our ER and Surgery Departments! And what a beautiful love story!

Congratulations, Dr. Annalis Cigarroa!

She just obtained The Certificate of Neurosurgery Training in addition to being a Board Certified Neurologist & Neurosurgeon.

This certification is not required for neurologists, however it is an additional training that neurologists interested in advanced neurosurgery techniques can achieve by performing a wide array of neurosurgeries and attending a specialized training course.

For Dr. Cigarroa's application to be approved, she documented advanced surgeries (brain and spinal surgeries) that she had performed either on patients or under the guidance of neurosurgeons at the training course. She applied for the certificate because she loves neurosurgery and is always interested in learning advanced techniques through continuing education.

We are so happy for her dedication to Neurosurgery! And we are grateful to have her on our team to help continue to advance AVES' medicine.

Princess, a 2-year-old spayed Chihuahua, was presented to the AVES ER after developing sudden vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and a decreased appetite. On evaluation, she was mildly dehydrated and showing signs consistent with acute hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE), a serious gastrointestinal condition that can cause rapid fluid loss and severe illness in dogs.

Diagnostics, including bloodwork and abdominal ultrasound, helped rule out other causes and confirmed significant inflammation within her gastrointestinal tract. Princess was hospitalized for IV fluids, anti-nausea medications, gastrointestinal support, and deworming therapy.

We’re happy to report that Princess responded paw-sitively to treatment — she’s eating again, her diarrhea is improving, and she was able to go home for continued recovery and lots of TLC. 💕🐾 She definitely earned her royal title during her stay with us! 👑

Sudden vomiting or bloody diarrhea can become serious quickly, so if your pet is feeling “ruff,” prompt veterinary care is always important.

Figaro, a 6-year-old Miniature Dachshund, was presented to the Austin Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center after experiencing a sudden progression of hind limb weakness caused by intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). What began as a wobbly gait quickly progressed to loss of function in his back legs, prompting advanced imaging and emergency surgery.

A CT scan revealed a disc extrusion at T11-12 causing significant spinal cord compression. Our neurology team performed a right-sided hemilaminectomy and discectomy to relieve the pressure on Figaro’s spinal cord — and we’re happy to report his surgery and recovery from anesthesia went smoothly! 🐾

Figaro received around-the-clock pain management and supportive care during his hospitalization before transitioning to oral medications for home recovery. While recovery from IVDD surgery takes time, we expect the biggest improvements over the next month as he continues healing.

This little “long dog” showed some seriously short- and long-term courage throughout his stay with us!

💙 We’re so happy Figaro is back on the road to recovery and ready to dachshund through rehab one step at a time.

On Wednesday, we had the pleasure of being a part of Hart Elementary School's Career Day!

Dr. Hedges and Dr. Sampson spoke with the students about what it's like to be a veterinarian, what tools they use, and how they help pets and families through their amazing medicine! Dolly, Dr. Sampson's pup was the star of the show and loved being the center of attention as the students gave her lots of pets and love!

Thank you to Hart Elementary School for trusting AVES to help inspire the next generation of animal lovers and future veterinarians! 🩺🐾We love being part of a community that encourages curiosity, learning, and big dreams! 💜

The AVES Team got a little swirly on National Tie Dye Day! 🌈👕

That day we traded in our usual workwear for something a little more colorful—and had a blast doing it together. From bold spirals to totally unique designs, every piece reflects the creativity and personality that makes our team so great.

It’s a fun reminder that when we collaborate (and aren’t afraid to get a little messy), we create something pretty amazing. 💫
