🧙‍♀️🐈‍⬛ The Lore Behind Witches and Their Cats

Imagine living centuries ago and sharing your home with a creature that moves silently, has eyes that shine in candlelight, and stares intently at something you absolutely cannot see.

You might have questions. Possibly about witchcraft. 👀

In parts of medieval and early modern Europe, folklore linked cats—especially black cats—with magic and the supernatural. Some people believed they were witches’ “familiars,” supernatural companions that helped perform magical work. Others believed witches could transform into cats themselves.

Quite the reputation for an animal that gets its head stuck in a treat bag. 😂

Their stealthy movements, nighttime adventures, and independent personalities make the mysterious reputation easy to understand. But those old superstitions had real consequences for cats and the people accused of witchcraft.

Those spooky peepers have a scientific explanation! Behind your cat’s retina sits a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum. It bounces light back through the retina, giving their eyes another chance to use the available light and helping them see in dim conditions.

When that reflected light catches your eye—or your camera—you get that familiar feline glow. ✨

🔦 Here’s the catch: cats’ eyes don’t produce their own light, and cats can’t see in complete darkness. Even your tiny hallway monster needs a little light to work with!

This Columbus Day, our veterinary team is sharing a little history about the feline friends we love!

Domestic cats travelled to the Americas aboard European ships, where they helped control mice and rats that threatened food supplies and equipment. Their hunting skills made them valuable shipmates long before they became our sofa companions. 🐾

Archaeologists have found domestic cat remains at early colonial sites in the Caribbean, offering clues about their arrival and spread throughout the Americas. The exact timing of their first arrival is still uncertain!

From catching mice at sea to stalking toy mice in your living room, cats have shared quite a journey with us. We’re happy their story now includes comfy beds, loving families, and veterinary teams dedicated to their care. 💛

Yesterday was LEX’S BIRTHDAYYY 🥳❤️ and obviously we gave our forever **HYPE WOMAN OF THE TEAM** the day off to actually enjoy it 😂 so today we get to celebrate her!! Lex is one of those people whose energy just radiates. She can make the worst day better with a perfectly timed **“YES QUEEN 👏”** or **“you got it boss!”** and somehow have you believing that maybe you actually DO have your life together. 😂She’s hilarious, honest, ridiculously detail-oriented, always willing to jump in wherever she’s needed, and just genuinely makes our little team better by being herself.We are so lucky we get to work with you, grow with you, laugh with you and do life alongside you. ❤️Happy Birthday Lex!! 🌙 The Midnight Hallway Sprinter: Fleeing an invisible threat at 3 a.m. Taking the entire household with them.

🦇 The Curtain-Climbing Cryptid: Rarely photographed. Frequently heard bringing down the curtain rod.

🔍 The Professional Decoration Inspector: Every item must be sniffed, slapped, and formally disapproved.

📦 The Cardboard Box Beast: Ignores the $80 cat bed. Occupies the box your Halloween decorations came in.

🕸️ The Cobweb Chomper: Has confused “haunted house” with “all-you-can-eat buffet.”

🎃 Feline Fright Fest: What’s Spooking Your Cat?

The vacuum. The doorbell. A visitor wearing a witch hat. Your cat’s version of a horror movie might look a lot like everyday life! 👻🐈

Loud noises, unfamiliar people or pets, new smells, and changes in routine can make your cat feel uneasy.

Watch for these clues: flattened ears, dilated pupils, crouching, hiding, or a flicking tail. These signals can indicate fear, stress, or irritation—look at your cat’s whole body and what’s happening around them.

Here’s how to help your feline feel more secure:

✔️ Offer safe hiding spots. A cosy box, covered bed, or quiet room gives them somewhere to retreat.
✔️ Keep routines consistent. Familiar feeding and playtimes help make their day predictable.
✔️ Ask us about feline pheromone products. They may offer additional support for some cats.
✔️ Let them approach on their own terms. Give them space, and never force introductions or pull them out of hiding.
✔️ Keep up with wellness visits. Our team can check for pain or illness that may contribute to behaviour changes.

URGENT PLEASE SHARE: Quaffle is a very sweet 15-year-old girl who needs a new home due to her family’s circumstances. She takes daily medication and would do best with someone familiar with caring for senior cats.

This is a big life change for Quaffle, and we’re hoping to find her a loving, patient home where she can enjoy her golden years. ❤️
