Food Forest Retreat

Food Forest Retreat Our permaculture farm is in the works! Update: We moved from the land after several devastating floods and a tornado.

Our blog features notes from Geoff Lawton's online PDC, edible Austin/hill country plants, permaculture videos and book reviews as well as revelations on starting a permaculture/food forest site. We will continue to maintain this page so our daughter will have it as a reminder resource of her beginnings and encouragement to hold our natural resources sacred. The Food Forest Retreat was designed to

be an all-around community resource: both for our local Austin community and for our web community. The blog offers news, videos and permaculture information--much of it specialized to the hill country region. Here in town Samantha and Erik volunteer with the East Feast 2022 project, a volunteer organization, to create a food forest at the Holly Shores park.

We'd like to take a moment to honor the legendary Malcolm Beck, who passed on yesterday. Malcolm's light will shine on gardeners the world over for generations to come.

Malcolm Beck was a pillar and a pioneer in the movement that is now known as "organic gardening." His simple,home-spun storytelling style taught innumerable people the joys and nuances of being in harmony with nature. His shop, Garden-Ville, which was started in 1957-- a full quarter century before organic gardening became a well-known and well-researched field, acted as the prototype for many, many garden centers, compost manufacturers, teachers, and even professors. Malcolm loved to have someone say "you can't do that, Beck!" so that he could showcase his monster okra, or monster pumpkin, using only natural fertilizers or amendments. Because he grew such strong plants, the need for pesticides was almost non-existent, but Malcom also invented and offered natural-based ones of those too. Some folks forget that it wasn't that long ago that gardeners were taught that the only way to garden was with toxic chemicals. Malcolm is one of my heroes for dispensing with that myth, and inviting the world to see the magic of nature, and his magical gardens.

I have some very fond memories of walking with Malcolm, hearing him riff like an excited kid about the pecans he grew, or his fish in the greenhouse, or seeing his outstretched arm to grab me a juicy tangerine; "They told me I can't grow these, but they'll stand up to a stiff north 10-degree wind!"

Mr. Beck, you've made the world a better place, and we'll miss you profoundly. Thank you.

Be informed.

Look up your local water system to find out which pollutants might be of concern, and find suggestions on the best kinds of home filters to remove those chemicals.

Today, the Senate did the right thing and did not advance a bill from Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) that can best be described as the Denying Americans the Right to Know (DARK) Act. The bill would have prevented states from requiring labeling of genetically engineered (GMO) foods and stopped pending state laws that require labeling to go into effect.

Many Senators properly noted that this bill fails to solve the problem it claims to fix. Instead, by blocking state laws from going into effect and replacing them with voluntary measures and impractical alternatives to labeling, it would have ensured that big food processing companies and the biotechnology industry continue to profit by misleading consumers.

Fantastic! Reason and diligence prevail!
We need to demand, even louder, that fluoride be removed from Austin's water supply.

Starting today the City of San Marcos and Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, operator of the City of San Marcos Water Treatment Plant, will terminate the practice of adding fluoride to the drinking water. 30 year study shows organic yields match conventional yields.
Organic outperforms conventional in years of drought.
Organic farming systems build rather than deplete soil organic matter, making it a more sustainable system.
Organic farming uses 45% less energy and is more efficient.
Conventional systems produce 40% more greenhouse gases.
Organic farming systems are more profitable than conventional.

"As we face uncertain and extreme weather patterns, growing scarcity and expense of oil, lack of water, and a growing population, we will require farming systems that can adapt, withstand or even mitigate these problems while producing healthy, nourishing food. After more than 30 years of side-by-side research in our Farming Systems Trial (FST), Rodale Institute has demonstrated that organic farming is better equipped to feed us now and well into the ever changing future."

A link to pdf of the study from the Rodale Institute can be found here:

Is organic farming more resilient, higher yielding, more energy efficient and more profitable? The Rodale Institute's latest report of a 30 year trial says it is. Read the full report free here.

Seriously... I can't believe we are at this point. The House passed a bill this last week that would prevent Americans from knowing what is in their food. All polls I have seen indicate that about 94% of all Americans want to know what is in their food.
Let the POTUS and our senators know your feelings on this issue.

The Deny Americans the Right to Know Act would block all states from requiring labeling of GMO foods. Big Food and its allies are pulling out all the stops to get it passed this year. TAKE ACTION TODAY and help us stop it! http://bit.ly/1h2X2ro
