What Fear-Free Grooming Means
At As the Fur Flies, your dog’s emotional wellbeing matters just as much as the haircut.
Fear free grooming means we do not force dogs through fear, panic, or overwhelming stress just to “get the groom done.” Dogs communicate with us constantly through their body language, and it is our job to listen.
Some signs of stress can include:
• Trembling
• Panting
• Lip licking
• Whale eye
• Freezing
• Trying to escape
• Vocalizing
• Refusing handling
When a dog is scared or anxious, pushing them past their limits can create lasting trauma and make future grooming appointments even harder. Fear can build over time, eventually leading to panic, shutdown behaviors, or aggression.
That is why we focus on creating positive experiences through patience, trust, and compassion.
Fear free grooming may include:
• Extra breaks
• Shorter appointments
• Positive reinforcement
• Desensitization visits
• Slower introductions to tools and handling
• Working at your dog’s comfort level and pace
And sometimes, that means we may not be able to complete every groom.
While this approach may not be the right fit for every dog or every owner, we believe protecting a dog’s trust and emotional safety is more important than forcing perfection in a single appointment.
Sometimes progress looks like a full haircut.
Sometimes progress simply looks like a dog leaving less afraid than when they arrived.
And to us, that matters just as much. 💜
