𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗖𝗥 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗸 💙

Rocket is a 9-year-old Lab/Chow mix with hip dysplasia and arthritis. Over the past few months, his owner has noticed that he's been turning around early on walks, having more trouble jumping onto the couch, and moving more slowly. His owner would love to help him avoid surgery, improve his comfort, and get back to hiking together.

For Rocket, we're focusing on reducing the pain and stiffness in his hips and legs to make movements like getting up, jumping onto the couch, and walking more comfortable. We'll work on rebuilding the strength in his back legs and improving his balance and control so everyday activities like standing, getting on and off the furniture, and using the stairs are easier. As his strength and endurance improve, our goal is to help him safely return to longer walks and eventually get back to hiking with his owner.

We're excited to help Rocket feel better and work toward getting back to the activities he enjoys.

🐶 Have you noticed your dog slowing down when they turn?

Maybe they used to quickly spin around when you called their name. Now they take a few extra steps to make the turn.

Or perhaps they're slipping more often on smooth floors or seem less confident walking across uneven ground.

Turning and changing direction require more than strong legs. Dogs need to know where their feet are, shift their weight, and control their body as they move.

That's where balance, coordination, and body awareness come into play.

In rehabilitation, we can use targeted exercises to help dogs practice these skills. Over time, this may help them place their feet more safely, reduce missteps, and move through everyday activities with better control.

🐾 Will My Dog Always Need Pain Medication?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from pet parents.

Maybe your dog seems more comfortable on medication, but they're still:
• Taking longer to get up after resting
• Slowing down on walks
• Hesitating before using the stairs
• Avoiding activities they used to enjoy

Pain medication can be an important part of your dog's treatment plan, but it doesn't always address the reason your dog is moving differently.

Rehabilitation focuses on helping dogs move better by improving joint movement, reducing muscle tightness, and building the skills they need for everyday activities. As dogs become stronger and move more comfortably, some may be able to use less pain medication—but any changes should always be made with their veterinarian.

🐾 Why One Treatment Isn't Always the Answer

Many pet parents come to us looking for the "best" treatment to help their dog. The truth is, most mobility problems involve more than one challenge.

Your dog may:
• Take longer to get up after a nap
• Hesitate before climbing the stairs
• Tire out sooner on walks
• Walk with a limp or shift weight off one leg
• Move more slowly than they used to

Each of these changes can happen for different reasons, which is why one treatment isn't always enough.

A personalized rehabilitation plan may combine hands-on therapy to help joints move more freely, targeted exercises to improve the movements your dog struggles with most, and home exercises to help continue progress between visits.

Meet Woodrow, the newest member of the ACR Pack 💙

Woodrow is a 15-year-old Chihuahua Terrier mix whose family is hoping to help him get back to longer walks, rolling in the grass, and scratching on his own. Over the past year, his back legs have become weaker. His feet started dragging, he stumbled more often on the stairs, and walks that used to last 20 to 30 minutes slowly became short trips down the street.

Our first priority is helping Woodrow move more comfortably while building strength in his back legs so everyday activities become easier. As he gets stronger, we'll work on improving his foot placement and coordination to make walking smoother, while also increasing his confidence. Ultimately, our goal is to help him get back to enjoying longer walks and the little things he loves, like rolling around in the grass 🐾

🐶 Tripod dogs still need strength, balance, and support.

Losing a limb changes how the whole body moves. Some dogs compensate well at first, but over time they may place extra stress on muscles and joints that are working overtime.

Rehab may include:

Meet Orchid, the newest member of the ACR Pack 💜

Orchid is a 2-year-old French Bulldog who is recovering from a spinal condition that has affected the way she walks. Her foster family came to us after noticing weakness in her back legs, dragging of her back feet, and quick fatigue during activity. Even though she still loves to run around and play, she'll sometimes hop with her back legs instead of taking normal steps. They hope rehab will help improve her mobility and independence as much as possible, while also minimizing future flare-ups.

Now that Orchid has been adopted by her fur-ever family, they are just as committed to getting her the help she needs! First, we'll focus on helping Orchid's brain and body work together more smoothly so she has an easier time knowing where to place her back feet. As she improves, we'll build on that with exercises to strengthen her back legs, help her stay steadier on her feet, and make walking feel smoother and less tiring. Our goal is to help Orchid move through her day more comfortably and confidently.

Orchid has already made a great first impression, and we're excited to support her and her new family throughout her rehab journey. 🐾

🐶 CCL tears in dogs aren’t just “ankle injuries” — they affect knee stability.
The Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) acts like the ACL does in humans: it stabilizes the knee. Over time, this ligament can weaken and tear, leaving the knee unstable and causing discomfort or changes in how your dog moves.

This condition isn’t tied to age alone — any dog can be affected, but some groups (like spayed females and larger breeds) are more commonly impacted.

Early signs can be subtle: intermittent limping, favoring one leg, muscle loss, stiffness, and even a change in how your dog sits or places their weight.

Whether you and your vet decide on surgical repair or a conservative plan, early detection and a tailored support strategy can make a difference in comfort and long-term mobility.

🐾 Meet Chickpea!

Chickpea came to us after dealing with an on-and-off limp in her front left leg for nearly two years. While rest and medication would help for a while, the limp always returned once she was back to the active lifestyle she loves. Her family wanted to find a long-term solution that would help her move comfortably again.

Since Chickpea has been favoring her front leg for so long, other parts of her body have been working harder to help her move. Our first goal is to help her become more comfortable using all four legs equally again while reducing the extra strain on the rest of her body. From there, we'll gradually build her activity back up so she can get back to the adventures and playtime with her family and doggy sibling, Zephyr!

Chickpea is a sweet, determined little pup, and we can't wait to watch her progress. Welcome to the ACR family, Chickpea! 💛🐾
