AAFCO is a voluntary, non-profit organization that sets standards and guidelines for commercial dog food but has no regulatory authority. 🛑

Most dogs worldwide are being fed dry kibble — and while surviving, they are definitely not thriving. Statistics reveal increased obesity, diabetes, gastrointestinal diseases, and cancer in dogs. The longevity of dogs is declining.

So do you think these “standards” may need adjustments? 🐾

Butter 🧈 or lima beans are rich in complex carbohydrates, which provide a slow, steady release of energy. This helps keep your dog energized throughout the day, without the rapid spikes and drops in blood sugar that can come from simple carbohydrates.

They are packed with vitamins and minerals: Butter beans are a great source of essential nutrients, including:

Iron: Supports healthy red blood cells and helps prevent anemia.

Magnesium: Important for muscle and nerve function.

Potassium: Helps maintain healthy blood pressure, nerve function, and muscle control.

Folate: Supports healthy cell function and tissue growth.

Vitamin B6: Crucial for brain development, nervous system function, and maintaining healthy hormone levels.

Butter beans should always be cooked thoroughly to soften them and make them easier for your dog to digest. Use dry beans and soak them overnight before cooking. Avoid canned beans 🥫— especially with salt and additives.

Some dogs may experience gas or bloating if they consume too many beans, so it’s important to introduce butter beans gradually and observe how your dog responds. 🐶

Terms like "meal" or "by-products" indicate low-quality protein sources that may include parts of animals not typically consumed, like hooves or organs 🐾, which typically lack the essential amino acids needed for healthy muscle development.

Ingredients like corn, wheat, and soy are often used as inexpensive fillers to bulk up the kibble. They offer very limited nutritional value and may be harder for dogs to digest, leading to allergies or gastrointestinal upset in sensitive dogs 🌾.

Kibble is cooked at high temperatures, which degrades any natural nutrients present in the ingredients. Synthetic vitamins and minerals must be added to the kibble after it’s processed – these are often harder for dogs to absorb and utilize compared to whole-food-derived nutrients.

Your dog’s diet can easily consist of only a few fresh, healthy ingredients and the necessary natural supplements. It looks better, it sounds better, it tastes better! 🥩

A moisture-rich, fresh diet 🥩🥕 is generally more supportive for dogs with kidney issues than kibble due to its high water content, which aids in hydration and kidney function. Kidneys rely on adequate moisture to filter out waste from the blood, and a fresh diet with high moisture helps by ensuring there’s enough water to produce urine and flush out toxins—helping to prevent waste buildup that could worsen kidney damage.

In contrast, kibble is dry (only about 10% moisture), meaning dogs need to drink more water to meet their hydration needs. Unfortunately, many dogs with kidney issues may not drink enough on their own, potentially leading to dehydration and putting more strain on their already compromised kidneys.

Was your dog diagnosed with kidney disease, and you'd like to start cooking fresh food? I’m a Canine Nutritionist, and I can help. 🐾💧 Comment KIDNEY to learn more!

The fiber content in zucchini helps with digestion, promoting regular bowel movements and preventing constipation. 🍃

Zucchini is made up of about 95% water, which can contribute to keeping dogs hydrated, especially in warmer months. 💦

It contains antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin that support eye health and protect cells from oxidative damage. 🌱

Zucchini is generally well-tolerated by dogs with food sensitivities or allergies, making it a good option for dogs with specific dietary needs. 🐾

It's best to serve zucchini raw, steamed, or lightly cooked without any seasoning or added fats. Always ensure it's cut into small, manageable pieces to avoid choking hazards.

The antioxidants in cabbage have natural anti-inflammatory effects, which can benefit dogs🐶 suffering from conditions like arthritis or other inflammatory issues.

Cabbage contains compounds like potassium and fiber, which can help maintain heart health by supporting healthy blood pressure levels and lowering cholesterol.

Cabbage also contains glucosinolates 🌱, compounds that are believed to have cancer-preventing properties.

Cooking cabbage makes it easier to digest and reduces the chances of causing gas or bloating. Steaming preserves most of the nutrients while making it gentle on your dog’s stomach. As always, moderation is key! 🐾

In kibble, the crude protein percentage doesn’t distinguish between protein types, so two kibbles with the same crude protein level may differ widely in nutritional value. 🐶 Animal-based proteins (like chicken or beef) generally offer a complete amino acid profile that’s better for dogs, while plant proteins (like corn or soy) can lack certain essential amino acids. 🌽

This is an issue because plant-based protein sources are much cheaper, so pet food manufacturers often prefer to use these in higher quantities.

So it’s important to look beyond just the protein percentage listed on the bag when evaluating the quality of any kibble.

Some kibble companies started listing the percentage of animal-based protein in the food – does your kibble bag list that? 🐾

Blueberries, rich in antioxidants like flavonoids, can support cognitive function and may slow down age-related decline in senior dogs.🐾They boost the immune system with vitamin C and may reduce cancer risk. Add fresh or frozen blueberries to your dog's diet for a nutrient boost! 🍇
