🐾 Could your pet be in pain?

Pets can’t tell us when something hurts, and many are surprisingly good at hiding discomfort. Signs of pain can be subtle, including:

• Slowing down or hesitating on stairs
• Difficulty jumping onto furniture or getting into the car
• Stiffness, limping, or trouble getting up
• Sleeping more or becoming less playful
• Changes in appetite or grooming
• Hiding, irritability, or avoiding touch
• Changes in posture or difficulty getting comfortable

The good news is that pain management in veterinary medicine continues to advance! In addition to traditional medications, rehabilitation, laser therapy, weight management, acupuncture, newer treatments such as monoclonal antibody therapies can provide another option for managing osteoarthritis pain in some dogs and cats.

These medications are designed to target specific pathways involved in pain and may be especially helpful when developing an individualized, multimodal pain-management plan.

🐶🐱 Getting older doesn’t have to mean living in pain. If your pet seems to be slowing down or just “not quite themselves,” talk with your veterinarian. Sometimes small changes at home are the first signs that they could use a little extra help feeling comfortable again. ❤️

🧡🐱 Happy Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! 🐱🧡

Today we’re celebrating the orange, the floofy, the mischievous, and the slightly chaotic members of the feline world! 😹

Ginger cats may be known for their big personalities, but we think their best quality is how much love they bring into our lives. 🧡

Do you have a ginger kitty at home? Drop a photo of your orange baby in the comments! We want to see them! 👇🐾

💧 Is your cat suddenly drinking more water than usual?

An increase in thirst can be easy to overlook, but it can sometimes be an early sign of an underlying health problem.

Increased drinking and urination can be associated with conditions such as:
🐱 Kidney disease
🐱 Diabetes
🐱 Hyperthyroidism
🐱 Urinary or other medical conditions

You know your cat’s normal habits best. If you’re filling the water bowl more often, noticing more trips to the fountain, or finding your kitty seeking out drinks from unusual places, it's time for a visit to the vet.

A physical exam and simple blood and urine testing can often help us determine what’s behind the change. Early detection can make a big difference! 💙

🦇 Rabies Awareness in Austin 🐾

Austin is famous for its incredible urban bat population, but bats are also one of the wildlife species that can carry rabies.

Rabies is fatal but preventable, making vaccination especially important for our pets. Even indoor pets can have unexpected encounters with bats that find their way inside!

A few reminders:
🐾 Keep your pet’s rabies vaccine current.
🦇 Never touch a grounded bat.
🐾 If your pet comes into contact with a bat or other wildlife, call your veterinarian and animal control right away.

We can love our Austin bats while keeping our pets and community safe! 💙

🩺🐾 5 Things Your Vet Wants You to Tell Us During Your Pet’s Annual Checkup

Your pet may not be able to tell us what’s going on, but you can! ❤️ These little details can make a big difference during their wellness exam.

Here are 5 things we always want to know:

🍽️ 1. What they eat & how much
Tell us their diet, treats, table food, and approximately how much they’re eating each day.

🦟 2. What preventatives they’re taking
Which heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives are you using and how consistently are they given?

🔍 3. New or changing lumps & bumps
Let us know about any new lumps or bumps, or if an existing one has changed in size, shape, texture, or appearance.

🐾 4. Any itching... even if their skin looks normal
Subtle itching can be easy to overlook! If your pet is licking, scratching, chewing, or rubbing more than usual, tell us.

🧠 5. Any changes in behavior
Changes in energy, sleep, appetite, anxiety, interactions with people or other pets, or other behaviors can be important clues about your pet’s health!

You know your pet better than anyone. Even small changes are worth mentioning. We’d rather hear about it and determine everything is normal than miss an important early sign. 🐶🐱💙
