Share with us in the comments below how YOUR pet prefers to celebrate the Fourth of July!

No matter their holiday personality, a little preparation goes a long way. Keep pets safely indoors before the fireworks begin, make sure their ID tags and microchip information are up to date, and turn on the TV or some calming music to help drown out the noise.

Don't forget about the Texas heat, either! โ˜€๏ธ If you're celebrating outside, be sure your pets have plenty of fresh water, access to shade, and avoid walking them on hot pavement during the hottest part of the day.

We hope you and your furry family members have a fun, safe, and Happy Fourth of July! โค๏ธ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™

BOAS is real! Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome affects those snob-nosed breeds like Bulldogs, Boxers, Boston Terriers, Pugs, Frenchies. These poor dogs can't breath, but there is hope! Dr. Reyes-Worth at Pet Specialists of Austin loves to help these dogs.

Since, we have gotten many questions about screwworms, we thought it might be worth posting this article from Veterinary Partner.
https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=13135652

Basically, unlike "normal" fly larvae (maggots) which eat dead tissue in wounds, the screwworm (blowfly maggot) eats healthy tissue in wounds. They will not create a wound, but will take advantage of any wound present (which could include a surgical incision. Since post-operative patients should not be outside unsupervised anyway, it should be easy to keep all flies away.)

Most of the common oral flea/tick control products will also kill New World Screwworms.

Please don't hesitate to call us if you see any wounds on your pets or have concerns.

Again, healthy pets with no wounds, should have no issues.

Sorry, this is a little long, but I was interrupted twice by the thunder. Just talking about what to do when your pet is afraid of thunder. Stay safe out there!!

In a nutshell:
1. Don't reward the behavior with coddling. Try to ignore them.
2. Pharmaceutical help may be needed.
3. Thundershirts sometimes help
4. Desensitization can sometimes work.

Work with your vet to find the best solution for your pet.

We have an obesity crisis in our country - both humans and pets. The extra weight not only adds an increased risks for certain diseases, but it limits our ability to do a thorough exam on your pet. Are the extra treats worth a life threatening disease???
