Look at all the time that’s passed.
We have been just floored by the outpouring of love and support for our little project.
There are difficulties inherent to what this project’s mission is. We believe that while steadfastness is a virtue, we must always be able to receive critique, take inventory of situations and be able to pivot if necessary.
Early on in this project’s inception we had internal issues that caused us to rebrand and head in a different direction personnel-wise. This unintentionally led to there now being two competing businesses, “Black Lives Veggies” and “Veggies for the People”. It was never my intention to be in competition with another Black man for resources or customer base. Additionally, we have been pretty severely critiqued by a prominent Black farmer for where the startup money came from, and that initial investor’s ongoing very vocal support of the project. The critique is of white-saviorism, and I cannot completely disagree with that.
In my opinion the p***c nature and intensity of the discourse around the very existence of Veggies for the People takes away from the actual mission. I have to accept the possibility that Veggies for the People is doing more harm to my community than good. To me, this is an unacceptable outcome.
It is for this reason that we are effectively shutting down.
We have a few outstanding orders and those will be going out shortly and recent donations will be returned.
I look forward to coming back to this space at some point in the future, although I doubt Veggies for the People will ever sell veggie seedlings again.
For that, I direct you to Black Lives Veggies.
