# # # 🐾💙 Happy Visits = Happier Pets! 💙🐾

Meet **Sebbi!** 🐶💕 Sebbi is showing us exactly what a **Happy Visit** is all about!

For some pets, walking into the veterinary clinic can bring a lot of **fear, anxiety, and stress**. 😟🏥 The sights, sounds, smells, and memories of previous visits can make even a simple trip to the vet feel overwhelming.

That’s where **Happy Visits** come in! 🥰

Instead of coming to the clinic only when they need an exam, treatment, or vaccines, anxious pets can stop by simply to:

🐾 Say hello to the veterinary team
🐾 Enjoy some tasty treats 🍖
🐾 Get lots of love and positive attention ❤️
🐾 Explore the clinic at their own pace
🐾 Leave without anything “scary” happening!

The goal is to help our patients learn that **the veterinary clinic isn't always a place where scary things happen—it can also be a place where good things happen!** 🥰🐾

And Happy Visits aren't just about making pets more comfortable. They can also help **reduce stress for their owners**, too! When our pets feel calmer and more confident, veterinary visits can be a much more positive experience for everyone. 💙

Just look at that happy face on Sebbi! 😍🐶
**We think he's doing a pretty great job showing us what a Happy Visit should look like!**

If your pet gets nervous at the vet, talk with our team about ways we can help make future visits more comfortable and positive. 🐾💙

🐾 **Why Won’t My Dog Stop Licking?** 👅🐶

Have you ever noticed your dog constantly licking one particular spot on their leg or paw? What may start as a little lick can sometimes turn into a **lick granuloma**—a thickened, irritated area of skin caused by repeated licking and chewing.

You may also notice **brown, reddish, or rust-colored staining** around the affected area. This is commonly called **lick staining** and happens because pigments in saliva can discolor the hair when a pet repeatedly licks the same area. 🐾

But here's the important part: **the skin lesion may only be the symptom, not the underlying problem.** 🧐

There are several reasons a dog may repeatedly lick an area, including:

🌿 **Allergies** — Environmental or food allergies can cause itching and inflammation, leading to excessive licking.

🦴 **Arthritis or joint pain** — Dogs may lick over a painful joint or area of discomfort, sometimes before we notice other obvious signs of pain.

🦠 **Skin or bacterial/yeast infections** — These can cause itching and irritation that encourages the licking cycle.

🧠 **Boredom, anxiety, or compulsive behaviors** can also contribute in some dogs.

Unfortunately, once the licking starts, it can become a **vicious cycle:**

**Itch or pain ➡️ licking ➡️ inflammation ➡️ skin damage ➡️ MORE licking!** 🔄

That's why simply stopping the licking isn't always enough. ❤️‍🩹

🩺 **A veterinary visit can help determine what's really going on.** Depending on your pet's individual situation, your veterinarian may recommend diagnostics such as skin cytology, testing for infection, an allergy evaluation, or an orthopedic examination to look for underlying pain.

Once the underlying cause is identified, an appropriate treatment plan—such as **itch control, treatment for infection, allergy management, or pain/arthritis medication**—can help break the cycle and, most importantly, **keep your pet comfortable.** 💙

So if your pup is spending a little *too much time* grooming one particular spot, don't just chalk it up to a bad habit. **That persistent licking—and even the staining it leaves behind—may be your pet's way of telling you something is bothering them.** 🐶🐾

✨ **When your pet can't tell us what's bothering them, diagnostics can help us listen.** ✨

🦠🐾 **Rabies Awareness Week is Coming!** 🐾🦠
**September 28–October 4**

Rabies may seem like something we don't have to worry about anymore—but unfortunately, **rabies is still present in wildlife and can affect both pets and people.** 🦇🦊🦨

The good news? **Rabies is preventable!** 💉❤️

Here are a few important ways you can help protect your furry family members:

💉 **Keep rabies vaccines current** — Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect your pet from this deadly disease.

🦨 **Avoid wildlife encounters** — Keep pets away from wild animals, even if the animal appears friendly or harmless.

🏡 **Keep pets supervised** — Secure fencing, leashes, and keeping cats indoors can help reduce opportunities for wildlife exposure.

🐾 **Don't handle unfamiliar wildlife** — If you find an injured or strangely behaving wild animal, contact your local animal control or wildlife agency instead of approaching it.

🚨 **Know what to do after a possible exposure** — If your pet is bitten or has contact with a potentially rabid animal, contact your veterinarian and local animal-control/public-health authorities promptly. Don't wait for symptoms to appear.

And remember: **rabies is almost always fatal once clinical signs develop**, which is why prevention and appropriate vaccination are so important. 🩺💙

This Rabies Awareness Week, give your pets a little extra protection—and make sure their rabies vaccine is **up to date!** 🐶🐱💉

**A tiny needle can provide a HUGE layer of protection.** ❤️🐾

🐾💰 **September is National Pet Insurance Month!** 🐶🐱

Our pets are family—and just like with any family member, we want to be prepared when the unexpected happens. ❤️

Accidents and illnesses can happen at any age, and veterinary care can sometimes become a significant unexpected expense. **Pet insurance is one option that can help pet parents prepare for those costs.**

🐾 **A few things to know about pet insurance:**

🔎 **Do your research!** Plans can vary quite a bit in what they cover and how they work.

📋 **Understand the details:** Look at deductibles, reimbursement percentages, annual or lifetime limits, exclusions, and waiting periods.

🩺 **Pre-existing conditions may not be covered:** Many plans exclude conditions your pet had before enrollment, so it's worth researching insurance before an illness or injury occurs.

💵 **Know how reimbursement works:** Depending on the plan, you may pay your veterinary bill at the time of service and then submit a claim for reimbursement.

🐶 **Consider your pet's individual needs:** Age, breed, lifestyle, and medical history can all be factors to consider when comparing plans.

Most importantly, **there isn't one insurance plan that's right for every pet or every family.** Take some time to compare your options and read the fine print so you know what you're purchasing. 🧐💕

Whether you choose pet insurance, a dedicated savings account, or another way to prepare for unexpected veterinary expenses, having a plan can help you feel more prepared when your furry family member needs you most. 🐾❤️

**Because planning ahead today can mean one less thing to worry about tomorrow!** 🐕🐈✨

💙🐶 **National Deaf Pet Awareness Week!** 🐱💙

This week, we’re celebrating all the amazing pets who may experience the world a little differently! 🐾✨

Deafness can occur in dogs and cats for many reasons, including genetics, aging, ear disease, injury, or certain medications. And while losing their hearing may change the way a pet experiences the world, **it doesn’t stop them from living happy, playful, and fulfilling lives!** 🥰

👂 **How can you help a deaf pet thrive?**

🐾 **Use visual cues:** Hand signals can become your pet’s new way of communicating with you.
🐾 **Use gentle vibrations:** Stomping lightly on the floor can help get their attention without startling them.
🐾 **Keep them safe:** Deaf pets may not hear cars, other animals, or other potential dangers, so keeping them on leash or in a secure, fenced area is especially important.
🐾 **Avoid startling them:** Approach where they can see you whenever possible, especially while they're sleeping.
🐾 **Keep identification current:** A collar with identification and a microchip are extra important if your pet cannot hear you calling them.

And remember, **a deaf pet isn't a broken pet!** 💕 They may not hear your voice, but they can still feel your love, learn new things, enjoy enrichment, play, snuggle, and be the wonderful companions they've always been. 🐶🐱💙

✨ **Different ears, same unconditional love.** ✨

Dear Clients,

Thank you for continuing to trust us with your pets' care. We are grateful for our wonderful clients and want to share a few important reminders to help us provide safe, timely, and compassionate care for all our patients.

Pet Safety
All pets must be properly secured while in the clinic and parking lot. Dogs must be on a leash and kept close to their owner, and cats and other small pets must be in a carrier. Even friendly pets can become frightened or react unexpectedly in a veterinary setting. If you need a leash, please let us know; we are happy to provide one temporarily.

Coming to Your Pet's Appointment
The person bringing your pet should be familiar with their health, medications, and current concerns and must be authorized by the primary owner to make medical and financial decisions. Family members, friends, neighbors, and pet sitters are welcome, but please make sure they have the information and authorization needed for the visit. Any authorized agent must be over the age of 18.

Please use the following link to schedule an appointment for your pets Request Appointment at Animal Care Center of Aurora

Sick & Urgent Pets
We will always do our best to accommodate sick pets, but we are a general practice hospital, not an urgent care or emergency facility. If your pet requires immediate or critical care, we may recommend going directly to an emergency hospital, such as VCA Alameda East. Referring your pet to emergency care does not mean we don't want to help; it means we want your pet to receive the appropriate level of care as quickly as possible.

Prescriptions & Appointments
Please allow up to 72 hours for medication and prescription requests, including outside pharmacy approvals.

Please use the following way to access our online pharmacy. This is the quickest way to get your pet's online orders approved. https://shop.animalcareaurora.com/pet/

Clients arriving more than 10 minutes late may need to reschedule to avoid delaying care for other patients. We also ask for at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations. Repeated no-shows or cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice may result in a cancellation/no-show fee.

Costs & Your Budget
We work hard to keep our pricing competitive, but we are not a low-cost clinic. We understand that veterinary care can be expensive and encourage you to discuss financial concerns with us. When medically appropriate, we are happy to prioritize recommendations, discuss alternative treatment plans, and work within your budget. We can also help direct you to lower-cost resources when needed.

If needed, you can apply for CareCredit to use for the cost of your pets’ medical care. CareCredit.com

Respect for Our Team
At our clinic, we are incredibly grateful for our wonderful community of pet parents who treat our team with kindness and respect every day.

We understand that caring for a sick pet can be stressful, and we welcome your questions and concerns. However, yelling, insults, threats, or other abusive behavior toward our staff will not be tolerated. Depending on the severity, this behavior may lead to a formal warning or termination of the veterinary-client relationship.

Our team's safety and emotional well-being are incredibly important to us and ensure we can focus entirely on providing the best possible care for your pets.

Thank you for taking the time to read these updates and for helping us maintain a safe, respectful, and supportive hospital. Most importantly, thank you for trusting us with your pets. We appreciate being part of their healthcare team.

Warmly,
The Animal Care Center of Aurora Team
