Royal Kings Lightnin is not the horse that will have everyone gathered around his stall discussing his conformation.

He is, however, the horse they'll ask to borrow.

Finished heel horse with a good handle, easy lead departures, and enough experience to know his job. He rides in a tie down, handles time off well, and comes back to work without requiring a negotiation.

Turkey is honest, practical, and straightforward. The sort that lets his rider focus on the task at hand instead of spending every ride wondering what today's surprise might be.

His pretty palomino color is a bonus, but his value comes from what's between his ears.

He would make an excellent:

• High school rodeo horse
• Heel horse
• Ranch horse
• Trail horse

Our first show of the 2026 season is in the books, and I'm proud of what these horses and riders showed us.

Stormy (Spade Talks Fooler) put together a strong and consistent weekend, earning
🌟2nd place in RHC Open Working Ranch Horse🌟
🌟T-3rd in CoWN Open Working Cow Horse🌟
🌟2nd place in RHC Ranch Riding🌟

One of my favorite moments was watching her carry Kim Stackhouse Lawson to a 2nd place finish in RHC Rookie Amateur Ranch Riding as well. A truly good horse adapts to different riders, and Stormy continues to prove her value both inside and outside the show pen.

The score sheets showed exactly what I hoped to see from a developing junior horse: moments of brilliance, some expensive mistakes, and a lot of potential. The pieces are there. Now it's our job to keep putting them together.

I'm also incredibly proud of Zullee (Iconic Azule owned by Sheridan Sloan) who has only been under saddle for six months! She handled her first show environment with a level head, gained valuable experience, and showed us plenty to be excited about moving forward. Young horses aren't measured by awards alone. They're measured by the foundation they're building, and her future is bright.

A special congratulations also goes to Wes Lawson, who stepped into the show pen for his very first horse show. Not only did he gain valuable experience, but he also earned an impressive
🌟+½ score for a catch on the dummy steer🌟

Another special Congratulations to Cal Lawson, who won't soon let us forget his win in the Short Stirrup class.

Anyone who has spent time in a ranch horse arena knows those moments don't happen by accident. It was fun to watch their hard work pay off.

Now, the goal isn't to be finished in May.

The goal is to be better after every show, every trip through the pen, and every day at home.

The log drag is not really about the log.

Like many ranch trail obstacles, it exists because of something horses have done in the real world for a long time. In this case, think branding pen.

Dragging a calf to the fire requires a horse that will stay soft in the bridle, hold a line, stay committed to pressure behind them, and keep moving forward with purpose. Horses have to think through noise, movement, and something pulling against them without becoming reactive or losing responsibility.

That same idea carries into the arena.

The drag tests much more than whether a horse can pull an object. It asks questions about willingness, confidence, straightness, and whether the horse stays between your hands and legs while handling pressure.

Because out in the real world, the horse that can quietly go to work and stay with you is worth his weight in gold.

The obstacle may look different now, but the lesson behind it remains the same.

For a long time, I thought progress had a schedule.

I thought young horses should be farther along by a certain age. I thought problems should be fixed in a set number of rides. I thought if I worked hard enough, timed things right enough, and pushed enough, I could keep horses on the timeline I had built in my head.

The horse never cared.

They never knew what month it was. They never knew there was a show circled on the calendar. They never knew I had expectations of where we "should" be by now.

They only knew the ride they got that day.

And somewhere along the way I realized most of my frustration had very little to do with the horse in front of me and a whole lot to do with the version of them I had already created in my head.

Funny thing is, horses got better when I quit riding tomorrow's horse and started riding today's.

Turns out progress was never behind.

I was just in a hurry.

Everyone’s still talking about the Kentucky Derby, and they should be. A woman trained the winner. First time that’s ever happened. And that’s a big deal. But if you’ve been around horses long enough, it’s not exactly surprising.

Good mares have been carrying this industry on their backs for a long time. They build programs. They pass on the kind of traits you can’t train into one. They show up, do their job, and don’t ask for much credit along the way. There’s a little bit of that same grit in the women who stay in this industry too. The ones who keep showing up, keep doing the work, and let the results speak for them. Mare power isn’t new.
It just doesn’t always get the spotlight.
