Guinea pigs are wonderful pets, but like all animals, they can be prone to certain health conditions. Here are a few common ailments we see in our furry little friends:
🔹 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐨𝐦𝐚
A common benign tumor (meaning non-cancerous) that develops from the hair follicle. These growths are often easier to surgically remove when they are small. If left untreated, they can become too large for removal and may rupture, releasing a white paste-like material.
🔹 𝐑𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐦
Despite the name, ringworm is actually a fungus — and it is highly contagious and zoonotic, meaning it can spread to people. It often causes crusty skin lesions and may sometimes be mistaken for mites or lice. Early diagnosis and treatment are important!
🔹 𝐎𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐬
Ovarian cysts are common in un-spayed female guinea pigs. Signs may include hair loss, abdominal enlargement, or discomfort. Spaying around 6 months of age is often recommended to help prevent ovarian cysts and other reproductive diseases. Un-spayed guinea pigs over the age of 4 years old are more susceptible to ovarian cysts.

Mammary tumors are also commonly seen in guinea pigs and interestingly tend to affect males more often than females. Routine exams can help catch these early.
If you notice any lumps, hair loss, skin changes, or unusual behavior in your guinea pig, don’t hesitate to schedule an exam. Early detection and treatment can make a big difference! 💕🐾
