Question I hear a lot: “Why is my herding dog chasing and nipping at our heels, the kids, my cats/other dogs, etc.?”

Answer: Because it is what they are preprogrammed to do! It comes naturally because it’s in their DNA. You know what herders are not preprogrammed to do? Be lazy couch dogs with no jobs. Behavior problems WILL manifest quickly with movement sensitive breeds when their owners do not understand that they need appropriate outlets to channel those instincts in healthy ways. It takes great management, a true understanding of your dog’s needs (they are way more than food/water/shelter/love), and the type of lifestyle that can provide ample opportunities for that dog to satisfy those needs. Does it mean all herders must have animals to herd? No, but it does mean being diligent about providing daily “jobs” that will help them feel content. If you aren’t purposeful about how you’re going to handle that, they will try to herd all the things, and can easily become neurotic. It’s not their fault, they are born that way and you can’t train it out of them. Have a herder that you’re struggling with? The current dog training landscape is awash in indoctrinated zealots, keyboard experts, and trainers who are either terribly ignorant or who are prioritizing their revenue streams over telling the truth.

Luckily there are some exceptions out there. Your job, if you want to succeed with your dog or as a dog trainer wanting to learn, is to find these exceptions.

Clues: look for those who whose information and ideas are often emotionally and intellectually challenging/uncomfortable, and whose information and ideas often come at a cost (rather than garnering cheap and easy virtue points), and whose information and ideas strangely seem to align with a reality (common sense) which deep down you know to be true.
