Each lifesaving transfusion at our Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital starts with a donor. 🩸🐾

This World Blood Donor Day, we’re celebrating the pups who save lives through the AUCVM Blood Bank. Since its inception in 2018, 46 donor dogs have participated in the program and have collectively donated 154 liters of blood products.

In the last year alone, the AUCVM Blood Bank has:

🩸 Collected 55.2 liters of blood products.
🐶 Supported 110 patients.
🧡 Received donations from 36 volunteers.
🎓 Graduated eight dogs from the program and added two new donors.

We’re so grateful to our donor dogs and their owners for stepping up and making lifesaving work possible.

Join us in thanking these four‑legged heroes! 👏

🤎 CVM PET OF THE WEEK: It's time for a triple threat feature of pets who brighten the lives of our faculty, staff and students.

Meet Loretta Lamb 🐑, Eclair 🫏 and Tipper 🐐. These farmyard friends live their best lives (just look at that sweater and bunny ears!) on the farm of Casey Storey, the CVM's coordinator of large animal research.

Loretta Lamb joined Casey's family at one week old after her mother decided raising twins would be a bit much. A fan of cucumbers and animal crackers, Loretta Lamb is convinced she's a dog and never misses an opportunity for neck hugs.

A dynamic duo, Eclair and Tipper are besties bursting with personality. Tipper earned his name while receiving care at the Large Animal Teaching Hospital. As a runt, he had a habit of tipping over any time someone tried to stand him up. Now, he and Eclair are inseparable and spend their enjoying their favorite snacks — pumpkins and German horse muffins — and keeping farm life entertaining for everyone around them.

🦅 Since we've acquired many new friends and followers from below the equator after Tuesday night's "War Eagle Flight," we wanted to remind everyone that public support is essential in supporting the Auburn University Raptor Center mission of conservation, education and rehabilitation. ⚽

The center provides veterinary care for up to 300 injured, ill and orphaned birds of prey each year with the goal of returning as many as possible to the wild. Aurea, the golden eagle that flew before Tuesday's Argentina-Iceland, is one of 21 non-releasable resident raptor ambassadors that live at the center and participate in educational programming.

❌ MYTH: Veterinary medicine only impacts animals.

This Community Health Improvement Week, we're highlighting the undeniable connectedness between human health, animal health and environmental health. From tracking infectious diseases and supporting shelter medicine to making healthcare breakthroughs that span species, the people involved in veterinary medicine care for far more than pets.

Here at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, the concept of One Health is at the core of how we prepare students and how we treat each patient that steps on campus. Because community health is strongest when people, animals and the environment thrive together. 🌎

The New World screwworm fly had been eradicated in the U.S., but has recently resurfaced. 🪰

With multiple confirmed cases in South Texas, here's what you need to know about the emerging threat:

🩹 Unlike most fly larvae, New World screwworm maggots feed on living tissue, causing severe wounds and tissue destruction that could lead to death if left untreated.

🐄 The parasite can infect any warm-blooded animal but is more common in cattle, swine, horses, small ruminants and dogs.

🔎 Even small wounds can put animals at risk. Pet and livestock owners should watch for warning signs like maggots, foul-smelling wounds, swelling, pain, avoiding food and water and withdrawing from the herd or other animals.
