The Haney family got this cute big paint gelding about a month and a half ago, super sweet on the ground and had been used mostly for light trail riding. He came with a known bucking issue at the lope and the mind of a baby horse although he's seven years old. He was also quite out of shape, but he is pretty π.
First we went the physical route and had him checked over by a vet. Among her recommendations, she recommended 3 weeks of slowly increasing groundwork to get him stronger and let a splint on his leg heal and build his strength up enough for the next step. So we did that, followed by me riding him for a week. I felt like he needed to go back to the beginning and work on getting forward freely and relaxed especially with his owner who is moving to the East Coast in a few weeks! So enters owner Aaron... We started in the round pen with me coaching and helping from the ground, the first ride got a little western, but we ended really well! Followed by a few more rides in the round pen that went increasingly better and non-eventful. Yesterday, we took it to the arena and besides a couple hiccups in the beginning, they did really well together. The goal is to get Comanche forward and relaxed at the same time while loping with his owner. They ended really well!
Nice work Aaron, you are getting pretty good at loping too. Thanks for putting in the work and good job hanging on (except the first time you bailed)!
