SWRHA Futurity Opens With First Champion: Platinum Non Pro Futurity - Glen Reed
Age is just a number for 89-year-old Glen Reed, who kicked off the SWRHA Futurity by claiming the Platinum Non Pro Futurity championship aboard Hey Sista, a 2023 mare by Colonels Shining Gun and out of Hey Voodoo Sista and earning $672.
Reed started his journey with Hey Sista in March having bought the mare from Max Tallone; since then he has pursued a hands-on method of training her by carrying out most of the work himself and at the same time getting occasional advice from professionals.
“I bought her from Max Tallone,” Reed said. “I have had some professional help with her, but I’ve ridden most of her myself.”
At 89, Reed continues to demonstrate his dedication to the sport, putting in the time and effort necessary to prepare his young mare for competition. That commitment paid off when the pair won the SWRHA Futurity championship.
Reflecting on his winning run, Reed kept his assessment simple, describing the performance as “pretty good.”
“She did what I asked her to do,” Reed said.
Reed not only enjoys the mare's performance in the arena but also values her personality and willingness, characteristics which have made it a pleasure to work with her.
“She’s pretty, and she’s kind, and I like that,” Reed said. “She’s really sweet.”
Reed, now that he has the championship, is already thinking about what the two of them will do next. But he intends to give Hey Sista a break before they return to competition in the spring.
“I’m probably going to take the winter off, and we will start again next spring here in Ardmore,” Reed said.
For Reed, reining involves more than just winning championships; the friendships and connections he has developed during his time in the industry are just as important as the success he has achieved in the show pen.
“I’ve made a lot of friends, and there are lots of good people that are reiners,” Reed said.
Following his victory, Reed made the opportunity to thank everybody who had supported him on his journey.
“I would like to thank my Savior.” Reed said. “Also my wife and my kids for supporting me in what I do.”
At 89, Reed shows no signs of stepping away from the sport he enjoys. With another championship under his belt and plans to return to the show pen next spring, Reed and Hey Sista started the SWRHA Futurity on a winning note.
