Thor is a sweet shepherd looking for his forever home! He enjoys treats, is learning how to play with toys, and gets along well with other dogs. While he does best with non-dominant companions, he has shown excellent patience with energetic, playful dogs and communicates appropriately when he needs space.

Thor walks nicely on leash, may already be potty trained, and is a very intelligent boy. In fact, he’s figured out how to open outdoor kennel doors on his own! With his gentle nature and good manners, Thor is sure to make a wonderful companion.

If you’re interested in adopting Thor, give us a call at 209-385-7436, email us at [email protected], or visit us during our business hours. We’d be delighted to help you find your new best friend! ⚡️🦸‍♂️🐾🏠

TEMPORARY SERVICE SUSPENSION NOTICE

Following the recommendations and orders of the Shelter Veterinarian, Merced County Animal Services is temporarily suspending intake of stray cats and all Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) services for a minimum of two weeks due to a recent outbreak of Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV).

Feline panleukopenia is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease that can spread rapidly in shelter environments. To protect the health and safety of animals in our care, we are implementing the following measures:

• Quarantining affected and exposed animals
• Conducting extensive cleaning and disinfection of shelter facilities
• Monitoring at-risk animals closely
• Temporarily suspending stray cat intake and TNR services

These actions are being taken in accordance with the Shelter Veterinarian’s disease-control protocols to help contain the outbreak and protect the animal population within our facility.

At this time, owner-surrender appointments, adoptions, rescue transfers, and field operations will continue for other animals as staffing and animal health conditions allow.

What you can do:
• Keep your cats current on their FVRCP vaccinations
• Avoid handling unfamiliar or sick cats whenever possible
• Watch for signs of illness, including lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and fever

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to contain this outbreak and protect the animals in our community. Updates will be posted on our social media pages as they become available.

Is your pet microchipped?

With the Fourth of July just around the corner, we encourage pet owners to take precautions to help ensure their pets can be reunited with them if they become lost. Fireworks and holiday festivities can be stressful for pets and may increase the likelihood of them running away.

At Merced County Animal Shelter, located at 2150 Shuttle Drive in Atwater, we offer microchips for $15 and no appointment is required. We recommend you give us a call before coming in to ensure we have microchips available.

We are also partnering with Atwater Veterinary Center to offer $18 microchips by appointment on June 10, June 12, and June 24.

If you have any questions, please call us at 209-385-7436 or email [email protected]

Meet Khaos! A STUNNING Belgian Malinois/Husky mix with handsome blue eyes!

At just 4 months old, Khaos was hit by a car and unfortunately suffered a broken leg during the accident. He was picked up by Animal Control and taken straight to the veterinarian. Thankfully, surgery was not required, and after 8 weeks in a splint, he made a full recovery.

Khaos is now approximately 6–7 months old, medically cleared, and ready to start his new life! He has been exposed to large livestock, including horses, goats, and cattle, as well as other dogs. He loves making new friends and plays well with dogs of all energy levels. In his foster home, he has been living with children and absolutely adores them!

Khaos knows several basic commands, including sit, lay down, heel, and shake. He has learned all of these commands in German. He enjoys walks, playing ball, and going for car rides. He has also been exposed to loud noises, including booms and fi****ms, and remains calm and unbothered by them.

Khaos is a high-energy young dog and would thrive with an active family or someone who can give him a job to do. Due to his energy level and moderate prey drive, we recommend that he not be placed in a home with chickens or small cats. He has never shown aggression toward them; however, he does enjoy the chase.

If you’re interested in adopting Khaos, please give us a call at (209) 385-7436 or email us at [email protected]
