Luring:

Once she starts to actively follow my hand, this will be the start of our Heeling training.

Nothing special or fancy. Just hold the treat in a way that allows them to nibble it as they follow your hand.

Targeting:

I have added full boy targeting into our rotation. I chose an object that she will eventually be able to fit all 4 paws on.

Right now I am working on her staying standing & having her two front paws on the object.

EDIT: I’m not sure why the video gets cut off; I simply waited her out until she put 2 paws on. 🙂

Distractions:

Here is a great example of working in a place that offered some low distractions while working.

Libby has been to the shop every day with me, and trained indoors but never outside.

She had to ignore people, vehicles, noises, and people while working. I went with her favorite behaviors as those are most fun for her, and I wanted her to have FUN around distractions.

When working near your dog’s distractions, think fun! How can you be more fun than whatever is around? Can you use their favorite toy? Treat?

Targeting & Sit/Stay:

Teaching your dog to touch something with their paw is a HUGE foundational step towards all the fancy tricks you see. It starts to teach them to offer behaviors (ie try to guess what you want) as well as how to move their body parts individually.

The sit/stay is not something I spend a lot of time on right now as it tends to bore Libby. I do it in quick sessions with a lot of releasing.

When you hear me say “Break”, it’s simply her command to get up from whatever position I had her in. I never use the word Stay. Ever. If I say sit/lie-down/etc., you simply stay there until I release you with your release word. :)

Luring & Shaping:

These active behaviors are taught using a mixture of Luring AND Shaping.

I started teaching Left & Right by luring Libby but have now started to slowly wean her off and allow her to start figuring out the behaviors herself.

I end the session with a few quick hand touches as I want her to feel confident at the end of every lesson.

Shaping:

This is my sixth session with shaping a Hand Touch.

Libby is VERY active and very eager to learn with a short attention span, which has made me completely rethink my plan with her.

Since she is so eager, I am now teaching all “active” behaviors first. Hand touch, spin to the left & right, touching all 4 paws onto a lid, etc.

Normal (& slower) things like sit, stay, lie down, etc. will be sprinkled in but they won’t be our main focus for now.

Always concentrate on your dogs strengths! It will absolutely help in training their “weaknesses”.

I highly highly recommend taking new puppies everywhere you possibly can. Expose them to all the noises, sites, & sounds...

I highly highly recommend taking new puppies everywhere you possibly can. Expose them to all the noises, sites, & sounds.

Eventually, you’ll have a dog that doesn’t “care” about new things and will be able to relax no matter where they are.
