Tired: Can you still train when your puppy is tired?

Yes!

While you can train your puppy when he/she is tired, I highly recommend keeping the sessions short, training easy tasks, and tasks that they ALREADY know.

When a puppy is tired, they are exactly like a cranky toddler. Imagine teaching a tired toddler their ABCs! It would make you and them irritated.

In this clip Libby is physically tired but still mentally “on”. I needed to help her wind down before putting her in her crate for nap time.

Balance; Session #2.

Once she gets confidence and can balance on this, I’ll start to work on her pivoting with her rear feet while she maintains her front feet.

Lots of noises and distractions to work around.

Baby Heeling:

I am not worried about what side Libby stays on, as long as she stays by my side.

I practiced two types of heeling; focused, and non-focused. This is the beginning of my non-focused heeing journey, as all I’m doing is encouraging her to walk by my side and not focus on me.

As important as training is, don’t forget to have fun with your dog!

Let them off-leash (in a safe environment) and sniff, run, eat stick, etc.

Remember, they are dogs. They deserve to BE dogs.

Putting Her Harness On:

This is Libby’s second session working on putting her harness on.

Nothing fancy, just click/treat every time she puts her head through the loop. Although this is NOT a necessary trick, or one I’ve even taught before, it’ll make getting her “dressed” easier on me. 🙂

Luring:

Once she starts to actively follow my hand, this will be the start of our Heeling training.

Nothing special or fancy. Just hold the treat in a way that allows them to nibble it as they follow your hand.

Targeting:

I have added full boy targeting into our rotation. I chose an object that she will eventually be able to fit all 4 paws on.

Right now I am working on her staying standing & having her two front paws on the object.

EDIT: I’m not sure why the video gets cut off; I simply waited her out until she put 2 paws on. 🙂
