There is no excuse to not pick up after your dogs. If you make a mistake and don’t have a bag on you or are unfortunate enough to have the bag roll run out mid walk, see if there is another dog walker around that you can ask or see if there are some provided at the place you’re walking. Worst case scenario, when you go home, grab a bag and go back out and pick it up - yes I have done that before!! It gets places shut down for responsible pet owners and gives all of us a bad reputation. NO P**P LEFT BEHIND!!

Creating the safe position is not an easy process so be sure to take your time and really get a strong spin command and a strong back command before trying to put it all together. My eager helper was just a little overexcited with the cool treats I was employing this morning which just added to baby brain scattering his thought process 🤣🤣 such a good boy 🄰

Ok! So you have your good heel and your good switch commands. Now you need to put them together on your walks in as seamless a way as possible (do it in your yard first, then practice in the driveway and then randomise it during your walks so it doesn’t become a trigger for them that something is coming). You also need to start practicing off-leash. This will give you a good gauge as to how much you are forcing the movements using your leash. You want these commands to be performed by your dog without your intervention so if your dog is unsure of what you are asking when you take the leash away, it means you have been doing the work and forcing the movement using the leash instead of the dog completing the action for themselves. If you find that they don’t understand what you are asking when you remove the leash, go back to practicing on leash and take note of how much you are engaging with the leash yourself and then loosen your grip and control over the movement. Take your time!

Our lovely Lowkey loves to play these games 🤣 who said Pitties can’t be trained!!!??? This is the step of moving from a heel to a switch position which is hugely important for getting your dogs to switch positions if you need to get past someone/something that is on your heel side without having to pull/drag them. Both my dogs are around the 90lb mark which makes it almost impossible to drag them anywhere so having them trained to do the work is required. For me, my dogs heel to my left so my switch is always to my right. If you prefer to heel to your right then it just means switching to your left. Either way, it’s all about luring them out in front and around so they are turning into your body before moving out by your side to the front. Again, this is a moving drill so try to make sure you have them moving at heel before creating the lure into switch and then move forward again while rewarding and naming the position.

Part 2 of heel - make your hand a pez dispenser!

Get your dog into the heel position using a treat as a lure and a leash to keep them with you if they get distracted. Move your hand in the shape of the number 6 at a slow speed to bring them out to your side and then towards you and step forward with them pressed against your leg while releasing the treat and saying ā€œyes, heelā€. Do not rush! If you go too fast and your hand goes beyond their reach you will end up losing them or create a nipping situation as they grab for your lure. Be patient and enjoy the process!!!

Let’s start working on heel, switch and safe! Super useful when out walking when you encounter other dogs and people!

A huge pet peeve and ick of mine and a lot of other animal handlers are when strangers come over and put a hand on the animal without even making eye contact with the handler and asking permission. This happened to my husband and I with our 2 fur babies multiple times over the weekend in a very short space of time. We are fortunate that both our gentle giants love people and handle being touched very well but a lot of dogs do not manage this scenario well. The other reality is that the dogs you approach may be working - they are not required to wear any harness or patch to say that they are working so it may not be obvious to an outsider. So, if you profess to be a ā€œdog personā€ and think it is appropriate to touch another person’s dog or crowd a dog’s space to say hello without asking the handler for permission, please know this is wholly and totally inappropriate. Our dogs really enjoy being out with us and being a part of our adventures so they do accompany us wherever possible. I take time to talk to people who ask about our dogs and their training journey when people are polite and respectful, as will pretty much any ā€œdog personā€ you encounter. So please šŸ™ respect a dog and their handler by checking in with the handler before making any move to communicate or touch the dog. If you are fortunate, you may get to interact with the dog in a healthy manner and learn something about their journey too.

I always have so much fun with this element of recall training! You do need another person to help you with this and, as I say at the beginning, try to do this inside first and with a singe dog in the training space. For video and demonstration purposes we had to be outside and we have 3 dogs at different levels in their recall process to help show the differences. Always remember to use their name as your recall word (the reason the dogs come one at a time is because they are recalling to their name not a generic ā€œhereā€ word).
To take your recall to another level:
1. Do all 4 steps outside in your yard on a long line (a long leash or piece of rope works great). That way you don’t have to worry about them running away at the start of your training and you can use their name line as a GENTLE reminder that you are there - don’t pull them to you, just give the rope a soft pull to let them know you are there and then release the pressure.
2. Once you have 100% recall on the long line, still in your yard, let go of the line and let it be on the ground where you can step on in if your dog gets distracted but don’t use it to bring them to you. It is a safety net for you at this stage. (NOTE: if you never get beyond this stage due to a highly prey driven or distractible dog or if you never feel comfortable with going beyond this stage, don’t be upset! There is nothing wrong with keeping your dog on a long line if you are in an unsecured location and I would STRONGLY recommend you keep your dogs leashed if you do not have 100% confidence in your recall ability!!!)
More steps are in the comments

Recall training part 3: add in a distractions tunnel between you before calling them so now they have to ignore their favorite things. Build up the distractions so start with one and add in more as you improve. Still in the house at this point by the way guys!!
