I want to celebrate the wins today, especially the ones it’s hard to explain to strangers. I’ll start: today Penny decided she wanted to do one of our two usual loops for her morning walk! Why is that a win? It’s our usual walk right? It’s a win because today is trash day and the collection trucks absolutely terrify my girl and usually on trash day we have to drive somewhere else to go for a walk.

Share your own wins! Dog related get extra points but I just want to hear about something that sounds normal but is actually a big deal!

One of the most important things about owning an animal is ownership of your responsibility for them. Most of the time that’s things like giving them enrichment and healthy food. Sometimes it’s realizing that what you’ve done wasn’t enough and fixing it.

A few days ago Penny and I were on a walk and had an encounter with a loose dog that didn’t go well. We were lucky that none of us were badly hurt. The owners of that loose dog had thought he was safely contained in their yard. But they came running as soon as they heard the commotion, one pulled their dog away, and the other stayed to check that Penny and I were ok. Everyone was fully vaccinated and no one was badly hurt. I was very thankful that they responded so quickly and so well.

But they went beyond just that good reaction in the moment. The incident made them realize that the fence they had was not adequate to contain their dog, even tho he’s not as young as he used to be. And it looks like they decided to do something about it because this morning there was a fence contractor at the house getting ready to work. THAT is responsible pet ownership.

Of course I’d rather the whole thing hadn’t happened, but I’m very thankful for all the ways that it wasn’t worse. The owners are a big part of why.

Every summer there’s a graphic that does the rounds telling you that if the air temperature is such and such then the pavement is so many degrees. While it is a well meaning graphic, it bothers me every time I see it. It gives the impression that the numbers it gives are hard and fast but doesn’t take into account any factors such as time of day, shade or sun, whether it’s just rained, how much humidity is in the air… you get the idea.

So here are some pictures of the difference in surface temperature you can get with different materials around 1pm on a sunny day in July. And one picture that shows the very simple test you can do to be sure it’s safe for your dog’s paws. Just put your hand (or the back of your hand or slip your foot out of your shoe and use that) on the pavement! If you can’t easily leave your skin in contact with the pavement for 5 seconds, it is too hot for your dog’s bare paws.

I get a lot of dog training content on my page 😮. There are videos telling you that you should do “balanced” training (reward and punish) or that you should only ever reward your dog when they do what you want, never ever punish or correct. And they’re never explicit about what they mean by “correct” or “punish”. And of course, whichever one you watch they show a dog doing exactly what they want in record time! It can be very confusing because it’s so vague and contradictory.

So here’s my take:

1. Always look deeper than a video. If you see one and think ‘that looks like it would work’ do a search. Get more details about that particular training method.

2. KNOW YOUR DOG. Just like people different dogs have different personalities. One golden retriever might behave very differently to another. This starts with the basics of what reward do they like best but goes much deeper. Learn their body language. Adapt your training to your dog. We’re supposed to be the smart ones after all!

3. Start with purely reward based training. If you have to add correction, keep it as minimal and gentle as possible. Example: my dog responds very well to attention and treats. Most things I can train with just that. However she HATES delivery trucks and recently developed a behavior where she will see one and instantly try to attack it. No time to redirect because she’s not stopping to think. It’s dangerous! She’s also very sensitive to correction. So I made a scolding noise while she was doing that behavior. That was enough to bring her back to a place where I do have time to work with her before she leaps. Minimal correction, back to reward based. The science shows that reward based training results in a dog who learns more quickly and RETAINS the training longer than a dog who is trained with a mix of reward and punishment. Training in the real world means we have to keep them safe.
