Lula, a beautiful Cattle dog mix began her training just recently. We often hear of people being bullied or terrorized, but dogs can sometime experience trauma too. Lula has her work cut out for her but her family— and her trainers are committed to the work too. Trauma can be overcome.

Did you know…that dogs can detect specific odors up to a mile away? Even underwater? Dogs are now being taken aboard boats and used to detect whale excrement that is sometimes as far down as a mile, on the ocean floor. The whale p**p is then brought up by mechanical means and used to study and track migration patterns. All done by training a dog to alert on a specific odor— whale dung!

A Hound’s Life

I have had the privilege of helping this family for the last several years with all the dogs they’ve had. Hounds of all types— Black and Tans and Blue Ticks— now Basset Hounds. All the dogs are great. Their humans take great care of them, making sure that all are safe and have their needs met. And if they have concerns or questions about the dogs they get those answered— I work hard to give the dogs and their humans the best help I can.

For those of you who have worked with me, you know that I can be a sticker for the mechanics of training. You have heard me ask, What are you doing with your right hand? Or maybe, How many times do we ask for a behavior?.” And while all of that is very important— the most important thing is the relationship between you and your dog. If that is intact and respectful and caring, the team can be pretty unstoppable. In the photos you’ll see the dog “ checking in “ with the human. Does your dog check in with you? Or is she more interested in the rest of the world?
