Animal Care & Protective Services would like to extend a sincere thank you to the students of Atlantic Beach Elementary’s Animal Care Club Leadership Pod for their generous donation collection benefiting the animals in our care.

We are incredibly grateful to these students for their compassion, community involvement, and dedication to animal welfare at such a young age. Their efforts will directly support the daily care and enrichment of shelter animals while they await adoption.

We would also like to thank Coral Reef Animal Hospital, one of FOJA’s heartworm treatment partners, for taking the time to speak with students about responsible animal care, veterinary medicine, dentistry, and emergency triage. Educational opportunities like these help inspire future leaders in animal welfare and veterinary care.

Together we can make a HUGE impact on the animals in the Jacksonville community.

🐾 Meet Rusty – Your Future Adventure Buddy! 🐾

Rusty is a sweet, heartworm negative neutered male spaniel mix, around 2 years old, weighing 31 lbs. He’s microchipped and up to date on prevention and all vaccines, including rabies, bordetella, distemper, and leptospirosis.

This energetic boy is super friendly, house- and crate-trained, and rarely barks—unless he spots a squirrel! Rusty is a pro at loose leash walking and is learning to walk perfectly by your side. He’s completed PetSmart’s Beginner’s class and knows “Sit,” “Wait,” “Come,” and “Leave it.”

Rusty loves running, chasing lizards, going for car rides, and playing with other dogs (he’s still learning about cats). He’s looking for an active couple or family with a fenced yard who can give him plenty of exercise and long walks.

All of Rusty’s belongings go with him, including:
Crate with bed + extra bed
Collar, harness, and leash
Toys, food & water bowls
Purina One Adult Sensitive Skin food
Car hammock and seat belt (optional)

Give Rusty the loving, active home he deserves! 🐕❤️

What are the signs of arthritis? 🐾

Pets with osteoarthritis (OA) can show a variety of signs, and they don’t always look the same every day. Some common things you might notice include:

• Trouble getting up or lying down
• Walking more slowly, or lagging behind on walks
• Swollen or enlarged joints
• Calluses forming or getting worse in certain areas
• A slight hunch in their back
• Shifting their weight from side to side or front to back
• Limping or favoring one or more legs
• Hesitation when using stairs
• Reluctance to jump on or off furniture
• Sensitivity to touch in certain areas
• Getting tired more quickly or cutting walks short
• Sudden irritability or aggression
• Changes in their coat (fur sticking up or lying flatter than usual)

What causes arthritis (OA)?

There isn’t just one cause. Several factors can contribute, including:

• Body structure and how your pet is built
• Weight (extra weight puts more strain on joints)
• Joint issues like hip or elbow dysplasia
• Past injuries or trauma
• Activity level over time
• Previous surgeries
• Nutrition

Most pets develop arthritis due to a combination of these factors—not simply because they’re getting older.

If you notice any of these signs, it may be worth checking in with your vet early. ❤️
