How did you get into dog training, Lee?
At 19 left home for the first time and joined the South African National Defence Force. No it wasn’t mandatory, I chose to do it.
Probably one of the best experiences of my life, and a time of significant personal development. After the grueling basic soldier training, I joined the Military Veterinary Institute(MVI). I worked with dogs in attack and patrol training, search and rescue, and detection work for narcotics and explosives. MVI further developed my intuitive understanding of dogs, in a structured training environment.
These days my focus is on the friendlier side of things, helping civilian dogs and their owners live in harmony. I work mainly on the fundamentals: basic obedience, leash work, and socialization, with my philosophy firmly rooted in positive reinforcement.
The Rottweiler’s name was Shrek, easily one of my favorite dogs to work with. He needed a handler who could be both gentle and firm at the same time. Shrek had a strong, dominant personality and would only take commands from handlers he truly respected. I’m grateful I had the chance to train with him, he was a special dog.
Love you forever Shrek. 🖤
