From Aegon’s Conquest to the Game of Thrones – 300 Years of Targaryen History 👑🐉

This image takes us through nearly three centuries of Westerosi history, showing the major eras that shaped the world of Game of Thrones. It begins with Aegon the Conqueror, whose invasion of Westeros united most of the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule. Riding Balerion the Black Dread alongside his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys, Aegon forged the Iron Throne and established a dynasty that would rule Westeros for generations.

The timeline then moves to House of the Dragon, set roughly a century after the Conquest. The story follows the Targaryen dynasty during the reign of King Viserys I and the devastating Dance of the Dragons, the civil war between the rival factions supporting Rhaenyra Targaryen and Aegon II. The conflict destroyed much of the Targaryens’ political power and led to the deaths of numerous dragons, permanently weakening the dynasty.

The timeline continues to the era of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, set during the reign of Daeron II Targaryen, when Westeros was still ruled by the Targaryens but faced growing political tensions. It then progresses to the Reign of the Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen, whose increasingly unstable rule ultimately contributed to Robert’s Rebellion. Robert Baratheon, supported by powerful houses including the Starks and Arryns, rose against the Targaryen crown, bringing an end to nearly three centuries of Targaryen rule.

Finally, the timeline reaches Game of Thrones, where the consequences of all those earlier events continue to shape Westeros. Robert’s death reignites the struggle for power, while Daenerys Targaryen emerges from exile with the last surviving Targaryen claim and eventually returns to Westeros with dragons. What began with Aegon conquering Westeros ultimately leads to another generation fighting over the same Iron Throne.

This period covers the Flavian Dynasty (Vespasian, Titus, Domitian) and the Five Good Emperors (Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius). This period is considered as the pinnacle of the military, architectural, economic and cultural power of the Roman Empire.

At that time, the population of the city was about 1 million (some estimates range from 750,000 to 1,200,000) and was the largest city in the ancient world. This population level is 19. It has not been seen in any European city until a century.

It is believed that the city of Rome reached its most crowded and glorious period between 100-200 AD.
