🍂 October is Animal Protection and Safety Month! The days are getting shorter, so it's important to double-check your pet's protection before you're out on walks.
🎃 Check your pet’s ID tags and microchip database for correct information
🎃 Choose reflective gear or a light for evening outings(for both of you), and
🎃 Keep your dog on a leash when you're walking near roads and driveways.
🔆 A little visibility can make shared walks feel much safer!

🥰 Today is World Mental Health Day! Did you know...Owning a pet improves your mental health by reducing stress, easing loneliness, and giving your daily routine a clear sense of purpose.
Animals do more than just share our homes. They actively change our brain chemistry and emotional well-being for the better.
🧘‍♀️Natural Stress Relief
• Chemical boosts: Petting an animal or watching fish swim lowers your body's stress hormone, called cortisol.
• Happy hormones: Physical touch triggers the release of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine. These are the brain chemicals that make you feel calm, connected, and happy.
⏰ Routine and Purpose
• Daily structure: Feeding, walking, and caring for a pet gives you a reason to get out of bed, even on tough days.
• Mindfulness: Pets live in the present moment. When you focus on them, you stop worrying about the past or the future.
💞 Connection and Community
• Less loneliness: Unconditional love from a dog, cat, or small animal makes you feel wanted and secure.
• Social bridges: Walking a dog or visiting pet spaces acts as an icebreaker, helping you talk to new people and build local friendships.
Make sure your furry friends have their annual physical exam scheduled so you can return the favor and help them live a healthier life! (770)832-2475

🦎 Dr. Harden recently treated this Gecko for an ear infection. Infections in reptiles cause a solid mass of pus rather than a liquid-like substance that drains itself, as in cats and dogs. The infection "walls" itself off and is not responsive to antibiotics. A veterinarian that specializes in exotics/reptiles is important in treating specific differences when birds, reptiles and other specialty pets.
Dr. Harden opened the ear canal and removed the infectious mass that can be seen on the last picture (not pictured after removal for those with sensitive stomachs🙂).
The Gecko went home to recover and the importance of temperature/humidity levels, vitamin A supplementation and cage environment were discussed on discharge.

🤓 October is National Pet Wellness Month which includes spotlighting a sometimes-overlooked part of your pet's wellness....their dental health.
When was the last time you looked at your pet’s teeth? Most pets don't allow mouth exams or enjoy inspection of their mouths. As a result, pet parents may not notice subtle changes in their pet's dental health unless it comes along with bad breath or bleeding.
🦷 Dental care is part of whole-pet care, and a veterinary team can help you choose safe home-care options. Additionally, your veterinarian may recommend a dental cleaning or removal of infected or broken teeth after a physical wellness exam. Dental exams can be done under general anesthesia which allows the technician and veterinarian to examine deep structures of the mouth and throat for abnormalities, gums for infection and back teeth for damage.
If you notice bad breath, trouble eating, or changes in the mouth, it’s worth making a veterinary appointment. Give us a call and let us help your pet live a longer, healthier life with whole-pet care. (770)832-2475

🥰 October is Adopt a Dog Month! If you're thinking about adopting a dog, there are a few things to consider:
1️⃣ Start with an honest look at your schedule: do you have time in your day for training, feeding, cleaning up after and walking/exercising a dog?
2️⃣ How much space do you have? Smaller, less-active breeds are best suited for apartment-style living and larger, more energetic breeds need space to roam and run
3️⃣ How much of your monthly income can be used towards pet expenses? While adopting a pet is often low cost (compared to purchasing a pure bred pup), there are expenses like monthly heart worm treatments, flea and tick preventatives, yearly veterinary visits, quality food and bedding/toys to consider.
4️⃣ What is your activity level? If you live a more sedentary life, then an energetic pet will leave both of you frustrated! If you want a companion on hikes and long walks, a Bulldog or other "low-energy" breed won't be a good fit!
Finding the right match can bring years of companionship! Taking time to prepare helps a new dog settle in with confidence. If you need help choosing the right companion for adoption, shelter staff or foster parents are usually excited to help you match with a good pet.
If you have adopted your pet, we'd love to see a picture below and hear about how they fit into your life!

🚶🏼‍♀️We're halfway through National Walk Your Dog Week, which runs October 1–7!
A walk can give your dog both physical exercise and mental stimulation, but there’s no one perfect routine for every dog.
Here are some tips to help walks go smoothly for you and your pet!
• Stay alert by keeping headphones off and watching for traffic, wildlife, and off-leash animals.
• Obey local leash laws and respect the personal space of other people and dogs.
• Allow your dog time to sniff and explore safely, as scent exploration provides vital mental stimulation.
Other things that impact your pet's activity level:
• Age: puppies and senior pets need shorter, less strenuous walks
• Health: pets with heart or arthritis conditions may need shorter walks and even ground surfaces
• Breed: flat-faced dogs (like bulldogs, pugs, etc) should be walked when heat and humidity are not at the peak; high-energy dogs (like Vizslas, retrievers, herding dogs) need to be run hard or walked for longer distances to get their "wiggles" out
• Individual needs also matter: check with your veterinarian to discuss guidelines if you are unsure of what your pet needs. Give us a call to discuss your pet's health!(770)832-2475

🥰 October is World Pet Obesity Month, a gentle reminder that healthy weight is part of overall pet wellness.
A body condition score looks at more than the number on a scale—it also considers fat coverage, waist shape, and abdominal tuck. Here are a few ways to judge your pet's obesity score:
👐 Feel the Ribs
• Place both hands flat on the side of your pet's rib cage.
• Press gently to see if you can feel the individual ribs.
• Ideal pets have ribs that feel like the back of your hand.
• Overweight pets have a thick fat layer, and the ribs feel like the palm of your hand.
🧐 Look from Above
• Stand directly over your pet while they are standing up.
• Look for an hourglass shape where the body narrows just behind the ribs.
• An oval or round shape with no visible waist means your pet carries extra weight.
👀 Look from the Side
• Crouch down to your pet's eye level from the side.
• Check the belly area for an upward tuck (a slope from the rib cage to the hind legs).
• A sagging or swinging stomach points toward an overweight score.
❗If you’re unsure about your pet’s weight, your veterinarian can help create a nutrition and activity plan that fits your pet. Give us a call and let us help you come up with a plan to maximize your pet's health and wellness! (770)832-2475

😍 October is Adopt-A-Dog Month®, so let’s talk about the dogs waiting for loving homes. American Humane Society has celebrated this observance every October since launching it in 1981.
Adopting a dog can:
✅ Give a shelter pet a second chance,
✅ Make room for another animal in need, and
✅ Bring companionship and more shared activity into your life.
If you’re thinking about adding a dog to your family, a local shelter or rescue may be a wonderful place to start—and adoption is a lifelong commitment.
🧐 What qualities would you look for in your next dog? Tell us in the comments, or tag someone who loves pups!
